The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1.

FIRST-EVER ISLANDER BASEBALL ALUMNI GAME IS A WIN-WIN

While it may have been an 11-4 win for the current players on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team, the first-ever Islander Alumni Baseball Game held as part of the athletic department’s 10-year celebration was a win-win for both sides.

“The first-ever alumni game was a total success,” said Islander head coach Scott Malone. “We went into the game looking to bridge the gap between the Islanders of the past and the current members of the roster and I think we were able to do that. There is no doubt we intend on making the game an annual event.”

The University of Kentucky had a great season in 2008 where they went 44-19. They ended up finishing in 3rd place in the Eastern Division in the SEC with a conference record of 16-14. The NCAA Baseball committee rewarded the team with the third seed in the Ann Arbor Regional. The Wildcats were knocked off in the first game of the Regional by the hosts Michigan but bounced back with a victories over Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan in a rematch. They ended up in the championship game of the regional against the Arizona Wildcats which they lost 5-3 to end the season. Read the rest of this entry »

While the regular season ended in May, several Golden Panthers are still taking swings and toeing the rubber as they take part in summer ball.

Tyler Townsend has led the way this summer, putting up terrific numbers for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League. FIU’s leading home run hitter in 2008 has posted a .405 average while slugging 11 homers, hitting 12 doubles, driving in 34 and getting on base at a .512 clip. Townsend’s outstanding numbers earned him an All-Star nod.

HYANNIS, Mass. — Baylor infielder Raynor Campbell was named to the 2008 Cape Cod League All-Star Game, the league announced recently. Campbell, a member of the Wareham Gatemen, was one of two non-pitcher reserves selected for the West All-Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass. The game will be televised on the New England Sports Network (NESN), available on DirecTV channels 623 and 624 (HD).

Campbell, who will be a junior at Baylor next season, ranks seventh in the Cape Cod League with a team-best .342 batting average (38-for-111). His batting average is exactly 100 points higher than the Wareham team average (.242), and Campbell has provided 14 percent of Wareham’s hits this summer. He also has two home runs, nine RBI, 20 runs scored. Campbell ranks fourth in the Cape with a .438 on base percentage.

I was shocked to find out that Deadspin.com had linked to some college baseball articles on Monday. The first one revolves around Buzz Bissinger who went to the CWS in Omaha a few weeks ago.
