The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 89 in our countdown with Oregon State sophomore RHP Sam Gaviglio. He is a 6’1 170 pound righthander out of Ashland High School in Ashland Oregon. He picked up three letters in high school playing under Don Senestrero. In his senior season, he went a perfect 13-0 with a 0.50 ERA including 108 strikeouts while picking up 5A Pitcher of the Year award. The Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the 40th round but decided to attend Oregon State to play under Pat Casey.

Walla Walla, Washington – After nearly 30 years, summer baseball in picturesque Walla Walla will be back at Borleske Stadium in 2010.

Pacific Baseball Ventures, LLC (PBV), a group of investors with strong ties to the Walla Walla community, announces today that they have been granted an expansion franchise in the West Coast League (WCL). The team will begin administrative operations in Walla Walla in November of 2009, and will play a full WCL schedule starting in June 2010. They will play home games at historic Borleske Stadium, bringing minor-league style baseball back to the park for the first time since 1983, when it last hosted the likes of Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn.

DURHAM, N.C.–Mississippi and Washington State lead all schools by placing five players apiece on Baseball America’s top prospects lists for 18 different summer college leagues and Team USA. Last summer, Louisiana State and Texas each led the nation with five players apiece on BA’s summer league lists, and those two teams wound up facing off for the national championship at the College World Series.

BA ranked the top 30 prospects for the talent-rich Cape Cod League, and the top 10 prospects in 17 other summer college leagues. In addition, the top 20 Team USA prospects were ranked.

The Corvallis Knights will defend their West Coast League championship against the Wenatchee AppleSox. The best-of-three championship series starts in Wenatchee, WA on Saturday, August 15. The defending champion Corvallis Knights won their third straight West Division pennant, behind the hitting of Richie Jimenez (Riverside CC) and the pitching of Matt Andriese (UC Riverside). They will play the Bend Elks in the first playoff round. The first game of the best-of-three series will be in Bend, OR on August 11. Bend Elks 3, Bellingham Bells 2 (13 innings)

Another West Coast League game, and extra innings. CF Lucas Hileman (Baylor) came home on a wild pitch by Mitch Ludtke (Skagit Valley CC) to provide the winning run in the top of the 13th.

Both teams got excellent efforts from their starters, although they were long gone before it was over. Bend’s Peter Lavin (San Francisco) allowed eight hits over eight innings, and Bellingham’s Tyrell Poggemeyer (Skagit Valley CC, transferring to Lewis-Clark State) allowed five hits over seven innings. After giving up runs in the first two innings on RBI single by RF Cal Towey (Baylor)  and 2B Colin Stock (Saint Mary’s) coming in on a double steal, Poggemeyer retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced.

Kitsap Blue Jackets 3, Corvallis Knights 1 (20 innings) (completion of suspended game)
Corvallis Knights 6, Kitsap Blue Jackets 3 (13 innings)

The Kitsap Blue Jackets play their home games at the Kitsap Fairgrounds and Events Center near Bremerton, WA, which is a one-hour ferry ride west of Seattle.

A wild West Coast League evening started with the completion of a game that was suspended after 16 innings on June 17 with the score 1-1, because the lights went out at 11 PM. It took another four innings to settle it. Andy Bethel (Washington) hit a ball into shallow center field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the twentieth inning. The outfielder dropped it to allow the winning run to score. Cody Hevner (hasn’t picked a college yet) got the win, and Steve Kalush (Santa Clara) got the loss. Box score and play-by-play The Knights defeated the Blue Jackets 1-0 the previous night (Liam Baron [Linn-Benton CC] pitched a three-hit shutout), and Blue Jackets owner Rick Smith, a Bremerton attorney, was quick to point out that his team had held the Knights, ranked #3 nationally by Perfect Game Crosschecker, to a total of two runs over 29 innings. The Corvallis Knights lead the West Division with a 21-5 record. The defending champions swept three games against the Kelowna Falcons, and won two of three against the East Division leader, the Wenatchee AppleSox.

Eddie Orozco (UC-Riverside), Trevor Smith (Linn-Benton CC), Drew Leary (San Diego State), and Liam Baron (Linn-Benton CC) combined for a 3-0 shutout at Kelowna, holding the Knights to three hits. The next night, Steve Kalush (Santa Clara) scattered five hits over seven innings in a 6-0 shutout of the Falcons. Read the rest of this entry »

The Corvallis Knights lead the West Division with a 16-4 record. On July 3, they drew a league-record crowd of 3,506 against the Bend Elks. The Knights won 9-2; Matt Andriese (UC-Riverside) started and got the win, went six innings, allowed five hits, struck out seven. The winning run came on a home run by Dylan Jones (Mount Hood CC) in the bottom of the fourth. Richie Jiminez (Riverside CC) leads the league in hitting with a .429 average. The Corvallis (OR) Knights swept a best-of-three series against the Wenatchee (WA) AppleSox to win their first West Coast Collegiate Baseball League championship. The AppleSox won the championship in 2006 and 2007.

The Knights won the first game of the series 6-4 (11 innings) in Wenatchee. The star of that game was Doug Cherry (Washington), who went 4-5, reached base six times, and was spectacular on defense. He drew a walk in the ninth to bring in the tying run and send the game into extra innings. Bryant Kraus (Portland) batted in the winning run in the 11th.
