The Florida State Seminoles lost today to the University of Miami (FL) 7-5 to end the FSU season without a National Title. Earlier this season, FSU and Miami (FL) had a bench clearing incident at the end of the ACC series. The incident started when the Seminoles showed poor sportsmanship by not coming out at the end of the game which caused a reaction from the UM players to get the FSU players out. (Full Article about incident available here.) Today, both teams came out of the dugout with the FSU players and UM players shaking hands without incident. Miami (FL) head coach Jim Morris and his assistants were standing at home plate waiting for Mike Martin Sr and his staff to come out of the dugout but it never happened. Jemile Weeks hit his second home run of the College World Series, closer Carlos Gutierrez worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning and Miami held off Florida State 7-5 in a Bracket 1 elimination game on Monday.

Day 2 of the College World Series is in the books with Fresno State knocking off Rice by a score of 17-5 and North Carolina picking up an 8-4 victory over LSU.

OMAHA, Neb. — North Carolina right-hander Alex White limited seventh-seeded LSU to four hits in seven innings and the second-seeded Tar Heels pounded out 17 hits to deal the Tigers an 8-4 loss in the 2008 NCAA College World Series opening round on Sunday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

OMAHA – An offensive explosion of 11 runs by the fourth inning, 13 hits and four homeruns vaulted the Fresno State Bulldogs to a 17-5 win over No.6 National seed Rice in the opening round of the College World Series.

Rice (47-14) is ranked No. 5 ranked in the nation and the Bulldogs have now six wins over teams ranked in the top 11 nationally in their last eight games. Fresno State improved to 6-2 at the NCAA tournament. Read the rest of this entry »

Fresno State is up 11-0 in the top of the fourth inning against Rice in the opening game in Bracket Two. Fresno State got on the board with four unearned runs in the top of the second and have tacked on seven more runs in the top of the fourth behind a three run homer by Danny Muno and a three run homer by Alan Ahmady.

The game is currently airing on ESPN.

UPDATE: Fresno State continues the onslaught, now up 16-2 heading into the 7th inning.

UPDATE #2: Fresno State holds on for a 17-5 victory.

Georgia used a four run ninth inning to rally past the top overall seed in the College World Series 7-4 on Saturday. Miami headed into the top of the ninth with a 4-3 lead over 8-seed Georgia but two errors by Miami closer Carlos Gutierrez allowed the Bulldogs to score the upset over the Hurricanes.

Miami got on the board first in the bottomof the first inning on a solo home run by Jemile Weeks. Georgia tied the game in the top of the third inning on a single by Ryan Peisel but Miami came right back and retook the lead on a two run homer by Ryan Tekotte.

StanfordThe Stanford Cardinal broke open a 5-5 tie with 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the opening game against Florida State in the College World Series.

The Cardinal struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and then added two more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 3-0. Florida State answered with two runs to close the gap to 3-2 before Stanford scored two runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead back to three runs at 5-2. Florida State answered with a three run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5.

Stanford then exploded for 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to send the Seminoles to the losers’ bracket.

OMAHA, Neb.—Buster Posey, Florida State’s slugging catcher and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic Baseball Player of the Year, is the 22nd annual recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Whitney Bank.

The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) selected Posey in a vote of over 300 members of the NCBWA and Dick Howser Trophy committee from an initial field of more than 700 nominees in 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

You can never count out Fresno State. The preseason #18 seed went 8-12 to start the season, only to come back to win the WAC, losing ace Tanner Scheppers in the process to a shoulder stress fracture. The Bulldogs were counted out in the postseason, given a #4 seed in the Long Beach Regional. After advancing out of a regoinal that consisted of Long Beach State, San Diego and Cal, the Bulldogs continued to surprise with an improbable Super Regional victory in Tempe over the #3 national seed Arizona State Sun Devils. Fresno State, led by NCBWA Coach of the Year Mike Batesole, looks to continue to surprise in Omaha, taking on the #6 national seed Rice Owls in their opening game Sunday at 2 EST. The LSU Tigers are heading into Omaha with victories in 25 out of their last 26 games with an overall record of 48-17-1 while going 18-11-1 in the SEC. They are led by second year head coach Paul Mainieri who will be making his second appearance in the College World Series after taking Notre Dame to Omaha in 2002. The Tigers swept through the Baton Rouge Regional with a victory over Texas Southern by a score of 12-1 before beating Southern Miss twice by scores of 13-4 and 11-4. The Tigers followed that up by playing against UC-Irvine where they lost Game 1 by a score of 11-5 then rallying in the top of the ninth in Game 2 to get a 9-7 victory and destroying UC-Irvine in the winner take all game 21-7.
