Texas 13 Sam Houston State 3
Longhorns score 12 runs in the first two innings and coast to a 13-3 victory over Sam Houston State to advance to Sunday’s 2 p.m. elimination game. In Saturday’s triumph, Kyle Russell (pictured) hit two home runs for the 12th time in his career and tied the UT all-time home run record with 55.
Rice 11 – St John 2
J.P. Padron and Jimmy Comerota combined to drive in eight runs and Cole St. Clair fired 4.1 innings of hitless relief to lead Rice to an 11-2 victory over St. John’s in in the winner’s bracket game of the NCAA Houston (Rice) Regional Tournament Saturday evening at Reckling Park. MORE

HOUSTON, Texas – The St. John’s baseball team plated the eventual game-winning run in the top of ninth to defeat No. 9 Texas, 2-1, in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament’s Houston Regional. Senior captain Jeff Grantham plated the game-winner with an RBI fielder’s choice, while Carlos Del Rosario had the other RBI for St. John’s (42-14). Red Storm starter Scott Barnes earned a no-decision after allowing just one run and striking out four in 7.2 strong innings. With the win, the Red Storm set a new school record with 42 wins. For Texas (37-21), Kenn Kasparek earned a no-decision after allowing one run and striking out four in 6.0 innings.
