Somerset, NJ — Defending Northeast Conference champion Monmouth sits atop the 2008 NEC Baseball Coaches Poll as the favorite to capture its fourth league title. The Hawks received six first-place nods to finish ahead of Quinnipiac in the voting. Central Connecticut State, a three-time champion this decade, claimed third. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The TCU Horned Frogs have been selected to win their third straight regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship in 2008. In a vote of the seven MWC head coaches and a select media panel, the Horned Frogs received six of a possible nine first-place votes and 60 points, while BYU (three first-place votes) received 52 points to finish second in the poll. South Easton, Mass. – The Northeast-10 reigning regular season and tournament champions were selected to finish first again as voted upon by the conference’s 13 coaches.

Franklin Pierce University, picked to finish second nationally in Division II by Baseball America, finished 26-4 in the Northeast-10 last year claiming its second straight regular season championship and second tournament championship in three years. GREENSBORO, N.C. - Defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina is favored to repeat as the league champion in 2008, as determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches. The back-to-back national runner-up Tar Heels were also picked to win the Coastal Division for the third-straight year, while Florida State was predicted to capture its second Atlantic title. Rivals writer Kendall Rogers continues his Top 25 countdown with Miami (FL) coming in at Number 2. Miami made the NCAA Tourney getting knocked out in the Columbia Missouri regional by Louisville on their way to the CWS. Miami returns a solid hitting team led by Yonder Alonso, Mark Sobolewski, and Blake Tekotte. They will need to become a better team on the mound to make their triumphant return to the CWS. ELMHURST, Ill. - After winning its record 10th straight league championship a year ago, Oral Roberts was selected to claim its 11th consecutive Summit League title in 2008 as voted on by the league’s eight head coaches. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been unanimously voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite, as voted by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches and Sports Information Directors, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Chanticleers’ junior outfielder David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C.) has been voted the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, while junior teammate Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J.) was voted Preseason Pitcher of the Year by the panel. Kendall Rogers of Rivals continues his countdown on the top teams in the nation today with UCLA coming in at Number 3. UCLA had a solid 2007 season which saw them go 33-28 but return two key players in 2008. They return pre-season All-American candiates Brandon Crawford and Jermaine Curtis. Rice has been the model program for consistency, so it should come as no surprise that the Owls are back in the national title hunt.

After taking care of business in Regional and Super Regional action last season, the Owls suffered a familiar fate in Omaha — they dropped two-straight games to North Carolina.

The Owls hope to leave no doubt this season.

While uncertainty surrounds the offense, the pitching staff is in outstanding shape.

Ryan Berry, Matt Langwell and Cole St. Clair spearhead the weekend rotation, while Lucas Luetge and Chris Kelley will log significant innings.

Like most teams, the Owls enter the spring with some question marks. However, we fully expect the offense to be better than people think.

We love how every organization puts out a Top 25 poll. The latest is the USA Today/ESPN Preseason Coaches poll  with Arizona State taking the top spot. North Carolina, South Carolina, Rice, and Arizona round out the Top 5. The USA Today poll makes more sense as FSU is ranked 12th and Baseball America has them unranked.
