Center Valley, Pa. – Army has been selected as the favorite to claim the 2009 Patriot League Baseball title in a preseason poll of the League’s head coaches and sports information directors.
The Black Knights claim the top spot with 48 points and eight first-place votes after finishing first in the regular season last year with a 13-7 mark in League games. Navy followed in second place with 37 points and two first-place votes. Holy Cross claimed a first-place vote and came in third position with 30 points. Defending champion Bucknell and Lafayette shared fourth place in the poll with 24 points, with the Leopards also claiming a first-place vote. Lehigh rounds out the poll with 17 points. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Last year’s regular season champion, Binghamton University, barely edged out the defending tournament champion, Stony Brook University, to claim the top spot in the 2009 America East Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bearcats received four of a possible six votes and garnered 34 points, while the Seawolves claimed the remaining three votes and finished with 33 points. IRVING, Texas — Texas A&M, the defending Big 12 regular season champion, has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2009 league title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The LSU Tigers are predicted to win the 2009 Southeastern Conference baseball championship, as voted by the league’s 12 baseball coaches in the 18th annual preseason SEC poll.
The Tigers, ranked as high as No. 1 nationally in multiple preseason polls, seek to capture their league-leading 14th SEC Championship and first since 2003. LSU returns 14 position players with starting experience and ten pitchers from their 2008 squad which won the SEC Western Division, the SEC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA College World Series. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and the voting members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association have each selected Elon as the preseason favorite to repeat as champion in 2009. A year ago, the Phoenix became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular season and tournament titles en route to a 44-18 season and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. ELMHURST, Ill. − After winning its record 11th straight league championship a year ago, Oral Roberts was a unanimous decision to claim its 12th consecutive Summit League crown in 2009 as voted by the league’s eight head coaches.
The Golden Eagles collected seven first-place votes for a total of 49 points. Only five points separated the next three teams as Southern Utah placed second with 40 points, Centenary was third with 35 points and South Dakota State is in the fourth slot with 30 points and the final first-place vote. SDSU edged Western Illinois by one point, as the Leathernecks were selected fifth with 29 points. Oakland (17 points), IPFW (13 points) and North Dakota State (11 points) rounded out the voting.

DENVER – Fresno State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2009 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. The coaches also voted on a preseason all-WAC team, and Fresno State placed four players on the team while Hawai‘i, Nevada and New Mexico State each had three. Fresno State junior third baseman Tommy Mendonca was named the preseason player of the year, while Hawai‘i senior Jared Alexander was picked the preseason pitcher of the year. NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The TCU Horned Frogs have been selected to win their fourth straight regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship in 2009 in a vote of the seven MWC head coaches and a select media panel. INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Illinois at Chicago has been picked to win the 2009 Horizon League Baseball Championship in balloting by the conference’s seven head coaches.
UIC received 36 points and the maximum six first-place votes as coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. The Flames posted a 35-22 overall record and 17-6 Horizon League mark a season ago en route to their fourth conference crown in six years. Read the rest of this entry »
