Share The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 75 in our countdown with Hawaii sophomore infielder/outfielder Kolten Wong. He is from Kamehameha-Hawaii High School in Kea’au, Hawai`i where he lettered in baseball and football. He was named State Co-Player of the Year as senior after hitting .660 for the season. He was named All-League First team from 2005-2008 while being named first team All-State in 2006 and 2008. He was selected in the 16th round by the Minnesota Twins but was not able to come to an agreement with the team.

Share The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 77 in our countdown with Arkansas junior first baseman Andy Wilkins. He is from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and attended Broken Arrow High School. He had an outstanding high school career as a senior batted .538 (63 for 117) with 18 doubles, a triple and 12 home runs. He also scored 52 runs and drove in 53 his final year with a .635 on-base percentage and slugged 1.017. He also hit .496 as a junior with a school record 17 home runs and 16 doubles while scoring 30 runs and driving in 60. He finished the season with a 1.109 slugging and .519 on-base percentage. He was named a Louisville Slugger High School All-American twice and rated as the 11th best prospect out of Oklahoma by Baseball America. The Texas Rangers selected him in the 25th round but could not come to terms with him making him head to Fayetteville Arkansas to play for the Razorbacks.

He is from Monee Illinois and attended St. Rita High School where he played four seasons under Mike Zunica. He finished his senior season with a .426 batting average with eight homers and 30 RBI as a second baseman.

We continue the list today with number 99 in our countdown with junior outfielder Matt Newman from Arizona State who stands at 5’11 175 pounds. He comes from Brophy Prep School and Glendale Arizona. After earning his two letters with Brophy, he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 49th round (1419th overall) of the 2007 MLB Draft. He couldn’t come to an agreement with the Diamondbacks which saw him continue his career at Arizona State.

DURHAM, N.C.–Mississippi and Washington State lead all schools by placing five players apiece on Baseball America’s top prospects lists for 18 different summer college leagues and Team USA. Last summer, Louisiana State and Texas each led the nation with five players apiece on BA’s summer league lists, and those two teams wound up facing off for the national championship at the College World Series.
BA ranked the top 30 prospects for the talent-rich Cape Cod League, and the top 10 prospects in 17 other summer college leagues. In addition, the top 20 Team USA prospects were ranked.

Share Ryan Schulz of The Commodore Nation Magazine has put out an excellent article about sophomore to be Sonny Gray who has overcame the loss of his father when he was a freshman in high school. Gray has been successful as he was the number 51 high school prospect by Baseball America and played for the USA National Team this past summer where he had a 3-1 record with a 0.75 ERA in eight appearance (two starts).

Share Aaron Fitt of Baseball America has an excellent article recapping the summer that Team USA had as they won the World Baseball Challenge on Sunday with a victory over Germany by a score of 8-1. He talks about how good of a summer that UCLA’s RHP Gerrit Cole and Ole Miss LHP Drew Pomeranz. He also discusses how the worst thing to happen to the squad was the injury to Christian Colon on Friday night when he broke two bones in his leg on a take out slide at second base.

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia — USA starter Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Team USA beat Germany, 8-1, in the championship game at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.
Germany got on the board in the first inning on no hits. Pomeranz (Ole Miss) put two runners on board with a hit batsman and a walk before a sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third. Ludwig Glaser followed with an RBI groundout to second base for the 1-0 lead.

Share Team USA will play their final game of the summer today in the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge in Prince George British Columbia. Team USA will take on the Germany National Team which picked up an upset victory over the United States team during the preliminary rounds (Full Recap). Team USA will send LHP Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) to the hill to face TBD pitcher from the German team. The game is set to begin at 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific. (PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia) – Andy Wilkins hit an RBI triple in second inning and Gerrit Cole (UCLA) pitched a complete game two-hitter as Team USA beat Canada, 1-0, at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.
Yasmani Grandal (Miami) hit a single to right field with two outs and Wilkins followed with an RBI triple off of the scoreboard in left center to put the U.S. (18-5; 5-1) up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Share Team USA enters the playoff round tonight of the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge tonight against Team Canada. The USA National team defeated Canada earlier in the tournament by a score of 5-2. Team USA is expected to send ace pitcher Gerritt Cole to the mound tonight while the Canadian pitcher is Jordan Rawlyk from Monterey Peninsula JC. The game is set to start at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM Pacific. You can check out Live Video from the game below.
