STARKVILLE, Miss. – Several candidates for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy highlight the 14th Annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Team announced Wednesday.

The 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA All-America Team includes eight now-consensus selections, and such Howser Trophy semifinalists as NCAA World Series-bound 1B Dustin Ackley of North Carolina and Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake, along with fellow luminaries pitchers Kyle Bellamy of Miami (Fla.), A.J. LINCOLN, Neb. – A total of 56 standout college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the 13th Annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Team, the organization announced today.

Baseball America has put out their Preseason All-American list lead by Justin Smoak (South Carolina) and Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt). Both players are expected to become top 5 picks in the 2008 MLB Draft in the springtime. Miami first baseman Yonder Alonso was the other corner infielder on the team leaving Brett Wallace (Arizona State) off the squad. The middle infielders are Gordon Beckham (UGA) and Jemile Weeks (Miami FL). The outfielders are teammates Kyle Russell and Jordan Danks of Texas. The team is filled out by Dennis Raben of Miami (FL). The biggest snub on the team is Dominic De La Osa (Vanderbilt). The pitching for the squad is led by Aaron Crow of Missouri after an unbelievable summer in the CCBL. The other pitchers are Christian Friedich of Eastern Kentucky, Brett Hunter of Pepperdine, Brian Matusz of San Diego, and Ryan Perry of Arizona. How is Jacob Thompson (UVA) left off the team? He has had two outstanding seasons in a very competitive ACC. Zach Putnam of Michigan is listed as the utility man after a strong NCAA tourney last season.

So why is it that the fellow posters on the CBB have had full inboxes since the NCBWA All America team was released? It all comes down to snubs… one in particular, but four have gotten me jazzed up.

It’s no secret to my fellow publishers at the CBB that this Commodore has a favorite player who goes by the name of Flash. Ryan Flaherty is the consummate John Olerud clone at the plate, lacing singles and doubles all over the field. He is the undisputed top bat at Short Stop (according to CBB partner StatStud.com) when looking at statistical measures and is riding an SEC record 35 game hitting streak into 2008. The Kansas City Star has another article about a possible new Rosenblatt stadium.

The Valley Baseball League has announced their players of the week which includes players from around the country including Tampa, Western Carolina, and Butler.

The Cape Cod Baseball League has also released their players of the week.

ABCA has released all region teams for the entire country but right now we only have found the Northeast team right now.

The ABCA has also released their 2007 All-American teams for Division 1 which can be found here.

The Capital Times of Madison WI has an article today about the University of Wisconsin’s lack of a baseball program and efforts to bring the program back.

The Arkansas Razorbacks are expected to compete for the SEC title this year behind Preseason All-American pitcher Nick Schmidt. They are coming off a 39-21 record overall and a respectable 18-12 record in the conference. There is some heat on Head Coach Dave Van Horn to produce since his teams have been talented but have failed in the eyes of the Razorbacks supporters. CSTV has posted two articles on the Vanderbilt Baseball team. The first article deals with ace pitcher David Price. It talks about how dominant he has been the last few summers on the USA National Team. He has a 95+ fastball with two off-speed pitches that he can through for strikes. The second article is about David Price’s teammate Pedro Alvarez who spurned the Boston Red Sox in 2005 to pursue a college education at Vanderbilt. Alvarez has become a superstar at Vandy nailing 22 home runs as a freshman. The full article is available here.

The Anderson Independent Mail has an article about Clemson senior first baseman Andy D’Alessio who turned down an opportunity to play professional baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he was picked in the tenth round. It was a tough decision for him to go back to college with all the guaranteed money he was due to make but decided that finishing his school work was the right thing to do. The Navy athletic department is doing a series of previews on the upcoming season. The first part is about the Starting Pitchers which is led by All-American Mitch Harris. He went 10-3 with a microscopic 1.74 ERA in 2006. He is expected to put up similar numbers again. The full preview is available here and the season prospectus is also posted here.
