Justin Milo has made an interesting journey in going from playing hockey and baseball as a high school senior in Minnesota to becoming a minor league player for the Yankees and a forward for the University of Vermont hockey team.

Utah signs Eight for 2011

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Five high school players and three junior college transfers will join the Utes next season. Coming from high school are Trey Nielsen (3B, Skyline HS, Utah), Cory Hunt (2B, Jordan HS, Utah), Ben Mordini (RHP, Cherry Creek HS, Colo.), Luke West (RHP, Juan Diego Catholic HS, Utah), Josh Alexander (OF, Mountain Pointe HS, Arizona) while James Brooks (SS/Utility, Cochise College, Arizona), Derek Christensen (RHP, SLCC, Utah) and Dustin Hobbs (RHP/Yavapai College) are the junior college transfers.

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook head baseball coach, Matt Senk, announced on Thursday that Mike Marron has been named an assistant coach. Marron, who comes to Seawolves after four years as an assistant coach at UMass-Lowell, will serve as the pitching coach in addition to helping with recruiting.

"We’re extremely excited to have Mike join our staff," Senk said. "He brings passion, success and an outstanding work ethic that will enhance the pitching staff and our program overall."

West Hartford, CT – University of Hartford Director of Athletics Patricia H. Meiser and Head Baseball Coach Jeff Calcaterra announced the hiring of Jerry Shank as an assistant coach on Monday. Shank will serve as the Hawks’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

"I am very excited to announce the addition of Jerry Shank to our staff,” said Calcaterra. “Throughout the search process, Jerry exuded a passion for college baseball and will be a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. ORONO, Maine – University of Maine baseball coach Steve Trimper announced today that Mike Cole has been named an assistant coach of the Black Bears. Cole comes to Maine after spending the past season as an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Vermont.

"Mike is a wonderful addition to our staff," said Trimper. "It’s great to be reunited with him once again. Known as a tireless recruiter and teacher, he will be a tremendous asset to our infielders and hitters."

The Bangor Daily News has an excellent article on former Maine coach John Winkin who took the Black Bears to the College World Series six times with the most recent appearance in 1986. He also coached at Colby College of Waterville ME and Husson College of Bangor ME during his 53 year career from 1954-2007. He was able to accumlate over 1,000 victories combined with the three schools. He finished his coaching career in 2007 when he suffered a stroke on his daily walk in Bangor. East Carolina won two games Sunday to force a Monday game in its regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C.

The Pirates dispatched Binghamton, 16-9, in an elimination, game, then withstood a late rally from South Carolina in Sunday’s second game for an 8-6 victory.

South Carolina moved into the championship round of the Greenville Regional with a 12-2 win over host East Carolina Saturday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates, who beat Binghamton earlier Saturday, 11-7, in a first-round game postponed from Friday, meet Binghamton again at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the winner advancing to face the Gamecocks at 6 p.m. USC can advance to the Super Regionals with a win either Sunday or Monday night. South Carolina won its opener over George Mason, but East Carolina and Binghamton were rained out in the second game Friday in the Greenville Regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

East Carolina will host the 2009 Greenville Regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium.  The first game of the regional will be between the two seed, South Carolina Gamecocks, and the three seed, George Mason Patriots, at 3 p.m. ET on Friday.  The host team and one seed, East Carolina, will then take on Binghamton at 7 p.m ET.

The first elimination game is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, and the winner’s bracket championship will be that night at 6 p.m. ET.  The loser’s bracket championship will be Sunday at 2 p.m. ET with the first championship game to follow that evening at 6 p.m. ET.  If necessary, the decisive game seven will be at 6 p.m. ET on Monday. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– In a rain-shortened weekend for many teams, the University at Albany baseball team was busy completing a four-game sweep of America East foe Maine with help from Player of the Week Gary Pitcheralle (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) and Rookie of the Week Zach Kraham (Ghent, N.Y./Chatham), as named today. The sweep soared Albany from a third-place tie to sole possession of second place in the standings. Binghamton hurler Jeff Dennis (North Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) kept his team in first place with a dominant performance on the mound down in Baltimore, earning Pitcher of the Week honors.
