AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s baseball team took a one-run lead into the top of the ninth inning but they could not hang onto the lead and fell to #12 Angelo State, 11-5, Tuesday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

St. Edward’s (12-10) got on the board early in this bout with Angelo State (17-7). Center fielder Dylan Schuch led off the game with a single up the middle and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Daniel Rufini.

Junior Trey Carter’s grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh propelled the Angelo State baseball team (5-4, 1-1 LSC) to an 8-4 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State (4-1, 1-1 LSC) in game two of the double header and earning a split for the Rams after ASU had dropped the opener, 3-2, to the Savage Storm.

– The ninth-ranked Ouachita Baptist University baseball team was on the verge of a doubleheader sweep of No. 18 Angelo State, but after taking the opening game, 8-4, the Tigers surrendered four runs in the final inning of the second game to fall to the Rams, 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Foster Field.

With only 11 returning players for the 2009 season, the Angelo State baseball team will be a prime illustration of the old saying, “You can’t tell the players without a program.”

Head Coach Kevin Brooks enters his fifth season with the Rams and will depend on a veteran pitching staff to lift his team into the postseason for a fourth straight year. Six of the 11 returners from the 2008 squad are pitchers, four of them with all-Lone Star Conference selections on their resumés.
