Share There is a lot of news going on with the Arizona State baseball program with the loss of Mike Leake to MLB and they continue to rebuild the offense after the run to the CWS in 2009. Josh Spence should head up the rotation again as the Aussie came back for his senior season after being selected in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the third round. Share Baseball America has put out their incoming 2010 Recruiting Class Rankings which are led by the University of Florida. Stanford comes in at the runner up spot with Arizona State, TCU, and Cal-State Fullerton completing the Top 5.

Share The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 99 in our countdown with junior outfielder Matt Newman from Arizona State who stands at 5’11 175 pounds. He comes from Brophy Prep School and Glendale Arizona. After earning his two letters with Brophy, he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 49th round (1419th overall) of the 2007 MLB Draft. He couldn’t come to an agreement with the Diamondbacks which saw him continue his career at Arizona State.

Share Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com continues his series of articles on conferences across the country heading into Fall Practice. Today, he checks in on the Pac-10 conference which he states is looking to rebuild after Arizona State made the College World Series last season. After the Sun Devils, there was a significant drop-off in the conference with Washington State coming in second place.

Share The College Baseball Blog staff recently got together to start discussing the 2010 season. We have each put out our 2010 picks for the College World Series. The most popular selection is Texas showing up on all six ballots with LSU, Cal-State Fullerton, and Virginia showing up on five of them. Share Pitchfork Nation reporter Michael Kossett recently sat down with Arizona State senior pitcher Josh Spence to discuss his decision to return to Tempe for his final season of eligibility. Spence had a solid 2009 season which saw him go 10-1 with a 2.37 last season including a solid outing at the College World Series. You can check out the full video below.

Share Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com has put out his biggest surprises from the MLB signing deadline on Monday evening. His two biggest surprises that signed are Texas A&M two-way player Brooks Raley and Rice RHP Ryan Berry. Each of them fought through issues during the 2009 season with Raley tiring at the end of the season while Berry was injured during the season which dropped his stock. He also goes over some of the biggest surprises that came back to school with LSU’s Blake Dean and Arizona State’s Josh Spence.

Share Arizona State who made the 2008 College World Series this past season received a major boost in the arm with Josh Spence deciding to return for his senior season while third round selection Jake Barrett decided to attend ASU over signing with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Sun Devils only lost two signees to the MLB Draft this year in Nolan Arenado (second round/Cleveland) and pitcher Chad Thompson (17th/New York Yankees).

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State baseball has named Ken Knutson as the program’s volunteer assistant coach, head coach Pat Murphy announced today. Knutson comes to ASU after spending the previous 17 seasons as the head coach at the University of Washington.
"Arizona State is very lucky to be adding a coach of Ken’s status to our program," said head coach Pat Murphy. "He is an established winner, a highly respected coach and I look forward to working with him."

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University head baseball coach Pat Murphy has hired Travis Jewett as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Sun Devil baseball, the baseball program announced today. Jewett comes to Arizona State from Washington State, where he spent the past five seasons as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
No stranger to Pac-10 baseball, Jewett has coached in the Pac-10 for the past eight seasons. He spent the previous five years at Washington State, helping lead the Cougars to an NCAA Tournament berth this past season, their first since 1990.

(PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia) – Asher Wojciechowski (The Citadel) struck out nine batters in seven innings and Team USA beat Bahamas, 8-1, at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.
Kolten Wong (Hawaii) hit a double down the right field line to score Tyler Holt (Florida State) in the first inning and Matt Newman (Arizona State) stole home in the second for a 2-0, Team USA lead.
