TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University head baseball coach Pat Murphy has hired Travis Jewett as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Sun Devil baseball, the baseball program announced today. Jewett comes to Arizona State from Washington State, where he spent the past five seasons as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
No stranger to Pac-10 baseball, Jewett has coached in the Pac-10 for the past eight seasons. He spent the previous five years at Washington State, helping lead the Cougars to an NCAA Tournament berth this past season, their first since 1990.

(PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia) – Asher Wojciechowski (The Citadel) struck out nine batters in seven innings and Team USA beat Bahamas, 8-1, at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.
Kolten Wong (Hawaii) hit a double down the right field line to score Tyler Holt (Florida State) in the first inning and Matt Newman (Arizona State) stole home in the second for a 2-0, Team USA lead.

USA starter T.J. Walz (Kansas) surrendered a solo home run to Jendrick Speer and a two-run shot to Simon Guerhing in the bottom of the fourth inning as Germany (2-1) went up 3-0 on the U.S.

(TOKYO) – Matt Newman (Arizona State) went 3-5 with four RBI for Team USA, but Japan rode a six-run third inning on its way to a 7-5 victory over the U.S., Monday, in the second game of the 37th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship in the Tokyo Dome.
Team USA scored two runs in the first inning on Japanese starting pitcher Yuki Saito. Matt Newman (Arizona State) hit an RBI single to centerfield to score Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) from second base and Andy Wilkins singled through the right side to bring in Newman for the early 2-0 lead. (CHIBA, JAPAN) – Team USA (11-1) committed three errors and left eight runners on base in a 7-1 exhibition loss to Budo University, Friday, in Chiba, Japan. The loss was the first by the U.S. this summer and it snapped a 35-game winning streak for the National Team dating back to last season.
Tyler Holt (Florida State) reached second base on an error by the left fielder to begin the game and later scored Team USA’s lone run on an RBI groundout by Blake Forsythe (Tennessee) in the bottom of the first inning. Read the rest of this entry »

Share We have two major coaching changes in college baseball today. The biggest news is former Arizona State recruiting coordinator Josh Holliday will replace Erik Bakich at Vanderbilt. Bakich left last week for the head coaching job at Maryland. This is huge news as Holliday recruited the number 1 class in the country for this past year’s freshman class and has also been with Georgia Tech where he brought in some excellent players like Matt Wieters. The other big coaching change is East Carolina’s recruiting coordinator Link Jarrett moving over to Auburn to fill that position also. Read the rest of this entry »

Jeff Metcalfe of Azcentral.com has an interesting article checking in on the Arizona State program. The first piece of news in the report is the fact that Jordan Swagerty is giving back his 70 percent scholarship to the school if more signees decide to join the Sun Devils then expected. (KANNAPOLIS, N.C.) – Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) broke the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) record for strikeouts in a game with 17 and pitched six solid innings to lead the National Team to a 15-1 victory at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in the opening game of a four-game friendship series against Guatemala. The roster is headlined by shortstop and 2008 National Team member Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton; Capey, Puerto Rico), and consists of five outfielders, six infielders, 10 pitchers, and one utility player.
