TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team scored a season-high 23 runs on Sunday, as the Sun Devils defeated Arizona 23-7 to complete a three-game sweep of the Wildcats. A third consecutive sellout crowd of 4,371 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark saw the Sun Devils improve to 17-3 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-10, on the season.
It was ASU’s first three-game sweep of Arizona since 2003, and the 23 runs were the most by a Sun Devil team since March 17, 2007, when they beat Maine 23-2.

ShareCal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]

This weekend we saw two bench clearing brawls take place with the Florida-Duquesne match-up having an incident on Friday night and UMass-Arizona got into it on Sunday afternoon. Both of these incidents were out of conference matchups and don’t have any history behind them. Since their isn’t any history between these squads, it makes it more disturbing. Share There was three substantial size upsets today with the UMass, Utah, and Evansville all picking up wins. The UMass Minutemen fought off a late Arizona rally in the final two innings to pick up a 9-8 victory over the Wildcats. The Evansville Aces grabbed a 2-0 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with number 19th ranked Pepperdine Waves. The biggest upset of the day was the Utah Utes picking up a 2-0 shutout victory over the number seven ranked Texas A&M Aggies. Read the rest of this entry »

Share Arizona State picked to win Pac-10
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Arizona State has been chosen as the favorite to win this year’s Pac-10 baseball title, according to a vote of the league’s coaches.
The Sun Devils received three of 10 first-place votes, earning 69 points overall. UCLA also received three first-place votes and 67 total points for the No. 2 spot, while Stanford was picked third with one first-place vote, totaling 64 points. Rounding out the top five was Oregon State, which nabbed two first-place votes and 58 points overall, and Arizona grabbed the final first-place vote for a total 56 points. Share Inside Carolina recently had a chance to sit down and talk to Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona and North Carolina head coach Mike Fox. Francona discusses how winning the College World Series in 1980 compares to winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox. He also gives some advice for the Tar Heels to winning the title in 2009. Coach Fox in the interview talks about how much of a pleasure it was to get Terry Francona down to Chapel Hill for the banquet that was held over the weekend and how important the incoming freshmen will be in 2009. Rivals.com College Baseball Editor Kendall Rogers put out a great article previewing the Top 10 Seniors for the 2009 season. He names your typical players like Michael Rockett of Texas-San Antonio and Preston Guilmet of Arizona. He also brings up Nate Lape of Marshall who flies under the radar as he plays for the West Virginia based school. The biggest name on his list is Ole Miss’ pitcher Scott Bittle who appeared in 27 games with a ERA of 1.78. He held opponents to a .145 batting average against. The rest of the list includes: Luke Anders of Texas A&M, Cory Harrilchak of Elon, Chris Fetter of Michigan, Chris Rusin of Kentucky, Ben Orloff of UC Irvine and Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe.
