The first Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week of 2009 hails from Bourne, with Braves pitcher Eric Cantrell securing that honor. Cantrell put on a masterful performance in the Braves’ first win of the year, a 5-1 victory over Wareham, recording eight shutout innings and improving to 1-0 on the season. Houston Regional host Rice and Xavier met in the afternoon game, playing for a spot in the regional final. The Owls cruised to a 12-5 victory over the Muskateers, setting up a re-match of Saturday night’s Kansas State-Rice matchup in the finals. Here is your day 3 recap for the Houston Regional.

HOUSTON — The Rice baseball team collected 15 hits, including eight for extra bases, and sailed behind a complete game pitching performance from junior right-hander Jared Rogers for a 12-5 win over visiting Xavier in the early game of the NCAA Houston Regional Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park. HOUSTON – The third-seeded Xavier baseball team captured the program’s first NCAA Tournament win Saturday afternoon, eliminating No. 4 Sam Houston State, 9-6, at Reckling Park in the Houston Regional hosted by Rice University. HOUSTON, Texas – Justin Bloxom went 5-for-5 at the plate with two home runs as 14th-ranked Kansas State cruised to a 16-8 win over Xavier in its first-ever NCAA Regional baseball game Friday afternoon at Reckling Park.
The Wildcats (42-16-1) belted 17 hits against the Musketeers (38-20) as Bloxom, Jordan Cruz (3-for-4), Carter Jurica (2-for-4) and Jason King (2-for-3) led the K-State offense in the opening game of the Houston Regional at Rice University. Read the rest of this entry »

The Rice Owls will host the Houston Regional at Reckling Park after finishing in second place in the Conference USA regular season and winning the Conference USA Tournament title. Kansas State, the two seed, meets Xavier, the three seed, at 2 p.m. CT on Friday. Following that game, host Rice will take the field against Sam Houston State, the four seed. The two teams split during their two regular season meetings, with the home team winning both affairs.
The first elimination game is slated for 2 p.m. CT on Saturday with the winner’s bracket championship to follow at 7 p.m. CT. The loser’s bracket championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, and the first championship game is a 7 p.m. CT start time that same evening. The College Baseball Blog made the annual trek out to Amherst MA to check out the UMass Minutemen. This trip was even more important as I got a chance to see the Rhode Island Rams who started to make some national noise this season with victories over Oklahoma State, NC State, Miami (FL), and Ohio State.
