The Crimson has put out a video report on the Harvard Baseball team’s appearance at the Baseball Beanpot last week. The video includes interviews with players and coaches about how special it was to play at the historic ballpark. Northeastern wins 2009 Beanpot Title 5-3 over UMass(Jim Pierce/Northeastern University)

The College Baseball Blog made the trip to Fenway Park to take in the Beanpot Tournament on Monday afternoon. The Championship game featured Northeastern University against the University of Massachusetts. Northeastern entered the weekend on a two game winning streak as they took the final two games in their series against Dallas Baptist while UMass entered the game after taking two out of three games against St. Louis. The first round of the Baseball Beanpot took place today with Northeastern taking on Harvard and Umass playing Boston College. Northeastern in the first game hammered Harvard behind a 18 hit husky attack which saw them walk away with a 16-5 victory. UMass scored three runs over the final two innings to break a 2-2 tie and advance to the Beanpot Championship game with the 5-2 victory. The championship game on Monday will see Boston College face off against Harvard in the Consolation game while Northeastern will play UMass in the Championship game at Fenway Park. BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time since 2000, UMass (11-14) won the Beanpot Championship by defeating the Boston College Eagles (18-18), 4-3, behind a fantastic pitching performance from Mike DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) on Tuesday afternoon at Fenway Park. DiCato took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before allowing a bloop single with no outs. The Eagles looked to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shut down the Eagle’s offense by retiring the final two batters of the game for his second save of the season. BC’s starter, Kevin Moran, struggled in the top of the first, allowing three runs to give UMass a 3-0 lead. LYNN, Mass. – Mike DiCato (Winthrop, Mass.) and Nathan Monroy (Flemington, N.J.) combined on a four-hit shutout to defeat Harvard, 3-0, in the opening round of the Beanpot at Fraser Field on Wednesday night. DiCato (1-1) hurled 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five to earn his first victory of the season. The Boston College Eagles have released their 2008 schedule which begins with a three game set against Georgia Southern which starts on February 22nd. Boston College then will play their annual game against the Boston Red Sox on February 29th. The Eagles will then play four games in two days against Mount St. Mary’s, St. Bonaventure, Lehigh, and Notre Dame in Palm Beach, Florida. They will then make a trip to Florida International for a three game set before heading down to Coral Gables to take on the Miami Hurricanes in both team’s conference opener. BC will play 31 games in the ACC conference in 2008 with other road series with Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina, NC State, and a single game with former BC head coach Pete Hughes with the Virginia Tech Hokies. BC will host Florida State, Duke, Wake Forest, and Maryland in their only home ACC series. Boston College will also take part in the Beanpot at Fenway Park on April 16th when they take on Northeastern and will play the championship game on April 23rd. The full schedule is available here.

The Northeastern Huskies won the Baseball Beanpot 2-0 over the Boston College Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park. Dan Milano hit an RBI single to drive in Mike Lyon with the first run of the game and took second base on the throw to the plate. The Huskies used some small ball tactics to get Milano home as he advanced to third on a fly out to the outfield and came home on a sacrifice fly by James Donaldson to stake Northeastern to the 2-0 lead. The Eagles only got five hits in the game with Jett Ruiz and Michael Belfiore each getting two hits in the game. Husky pitchers Sheldon McDonald, Bobby Carrington, Dan Zehr, and Ryan Quigley all combined to give Northeastern the shutout victory over BC. Bobby Carrington (1-0) got the victory by working two innings while Ryan Quigley picked up his fifth save. Ted Ratliff picks up the loss to drop to 4-2 on the season.

The Boston College Eagles (16-21-1) will head to Fenway Park this Wednesday to take on the Northeastern Huskies in the Beanpot Final. BC is coming off a weekend sweep over Wake Forest in which they had walk-off wins on Friday and Saturday, On Sunday, the Eagles offense came together and put an 18 hit attack to blow out the Demon Deacons 11-5. The Eagles will probably send Ted Ratliff to the mound who has been a very solid mid-week starter. He enters with a 4-1 record and a 4.69 ERA.

Northeastern enters Wednesday game with a solid 19-10 record and took two out of three games with Georgia State this past weekend. The Huskies have been getting solid pitching throughout the season with a Team ERA of 4.80. The Huskies are led on offense by Mike Tamsin (.364 BA) and Dan Milano (.351 BA, 8 HR). The Huskies are expected to start Dan Zehr who is 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

I would like to see a great crowd at Fenway on Wednesday supporting college baseball in New England. The weather is suppose to be fine and enjoy a day of baseball at Fenway Park. It is not too often that you can get box seats at Fenway for five bucks.

Harvard will not be participating in the consolation game because of a scheduling conflict with Yale. According to the UMass Athletics site, They will take on Holy Cross at 12pm.

BC Student Paper Preview

The Boston College Eagles picked up a 5-2 victory over Harvard in Lynn Massachusetts in the opening round of the 2007 Baseball Beanpot. The Eagles received a complete game from Ted Ratliff who only allowed eight hits and two runs in his nine innings. Boston College was led on offense by Joseph Ayers who went 2-3 with an RBI for the only multiple hit game by a BC player. Harvard used a combination of nine pitchers as they used this game as preparation for their big series against Brown this weekend which will likely decided the Red Rolfe division title. Harvard offensive leader was Brendan Byrne who went 3-4 with a run scored.

In the other game in the Beanpot, Northeastern pounded UMass 17-6 at Friedman Diamond to put the Huskies in the Beanpot final next Wednesday at Fenway Park against Boston College. The Huskies used a four run first inning to jump on the Minutemen early and never gave them a chance to get comfortable in Brookline.
