PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the 2009 baseball season underway, sophomore third baseman Greg Hopkins of St. John’s has been tabbed the first BIG EAST Player of the Week. Sophomore RHP Sean Black of Seton Hall has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior shortstop Jeff Grantham of St. John’s has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while junior RHP Michael Hill of Cincinnati has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

Grantham was 10-for-19 (.526) in a 4-1 week for the Red Storm. He scored four times and drove in seven on the strength of three doubles and a home run. In Game 2 against USF, Gratham led off the 10th inning with a walk-off home run, giving STJ a 4-3 win.

Hill hurled a three-hit complete game in leading the Bearcats to a 7-1 win over Seton Hall. He surrendered only three singles and one run, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Hill retired the final 13 Pirates he faced. He also became the first UC pitcher since 1999 to strike out four batters in one inning. Read the rest of this entry »

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST has named Notre Dame sophomore A.J. Pollock BIG EAST Player of the Week and Notre Dame junior David Phelps BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

Pollock earns his second consecutive Player of the Week honor after leading the Irish to a 5-0 week. The sophomore hit .579 (11-for-19) with eight runs scored and five RBIs. Pollock recorded a pair of doubles, a pair of triples and one home run to slug 1.053 for the week. He posted four multi-hit games, including three three-hit performances. Read the rest of this entry »
