Argo led the Fighting Illini as they swept Penn State on the road and claimed a share of the Big Ten lead. The freshman went 8-for-12 with multiple hits in each game against the Nittany Lions, also posting eight RBI while scoring six runs and knocking five extra-base hits, including a multi-homer effort on Saturday. The designated hitter opened the weekend with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring and driving in three runs while falling a single shy of the cycle in Illinois’ 7-3 win. On Saturday, he again went 3-for-4, this time driving in five runs and scoring two on a pair of homers as his squad earned the 11-5 victory. In the series finale on Sunday, Argo went 2-for4 with a run as his team earned the sweep in a 9-2 win. In the three-game series, the freshman hit .667 with a .692 on-base percentage and a slugging average of 1.667, giving him an OPS of 2.359. McCallum was nearly unstoppable at the plate last week, combining to post a .636 average with a .680 on-base percentage and a 1.636 slugging mark over five games. In a pair of mid-week matchups against UW-Milwaukee and South Dakota State, the junior went 3-for-4 in each contest with a combined five runs, 12 RBI and three home runs. His 12-RBI total marks the highest for a Golden Gopher in a two-game stretch since at least 1997, and his three homers over two games is a program best since 2004. Read the rest of this entry »

Dittman helped guide Illinois to a series win over Michigan and a victory over non-Big Ten foe Bradley last week. The sophomore hit .545 (6-for-11) over the four-game stretch with a slugging percentage of .909 and two multi-hit games. Dittman also recorded four runs and four RBI, advancing runners 75 percent of the time (6-for-8). Goebbert led Northwestern to a series split with Purdue over the weekend, hitting .625 and slugging 1.000 while reaching base at a .700 clip to combine for an OPS of 1.700. In the Wildcats’ Big Ten opener on Friday, the junior went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run-scoring double in a narrow 4-3 loss. Goebbert led the NU offense on Saturday, going 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI on two doubles and a walk as the Wildcats exploded for a 13-4 victory. Northwestern scored in each of the five innings that Goebbert came to the plate in Saturday’s game, and his weekend performance raised his batting average 40 points. Read the rest of this entry »

Toole led the Hawkeyes to four wins last week, scoring nine runs while driving in nine and raising his batting average 51 points to a team-leading .353 mark. The senior tallied four multi-hit games in six contests and racked up four extra-base hits, including a double and a homer in Iowa’s 25-6 rout over Tennessee-Martin on Wednesday. Jason Christansen was named the Player of the week for the Big Ten for the period ending on March11th. He hit .417 over the weekend at the Tony Gwynn Classic. The game against Oklahoma he hit for the cycle which was the first on the road for the Wolverines since 1976. Cory Luebke was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for pitching a complete game three hitter while giving up zero earned runs in a 10-1 victory over Western Michigan.
