Share The season was a struggle for the entire league as their was several rainouts setting up a couple of doubleheaders thus not giving LaMarre a chance to catch up on his golf game. Nicole in the article gives you a breakdown on a typical day in LaMarre’s summer in the league including dealing with his host family which kept him on an air mattress in the basement.

Share The Star Tribune reports that the Minnesota Gophers will play the 2010 college baseball season in its entirety at the Metrodome. The reason behind this is the fact that a new baseball stadium is being built on the Minnesota campus. The Gophers will have full use of the Metrodome as the Minnesota Twins move to a new outdoor stadium next season.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State baseball coach Jake Boss Jr. announced the addition of seven student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent and will report to campus this fall. The summer signees include: Dane Frazier (Mattawan, Mich.), Bryce Jenney (Northville, Mich.), John Martinez (Auburn Hills, Mich.), Chad Nielsen (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Trey Popp (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Chase Rihtarchik (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Joe Zwierzynski (Crystal Lake, Ill.). The freshman class for the fall of 2009 will number 14 student-athletes, as the seven who recently signed join the previously-announced seven that committed in November 2008.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Jon Mikrut, who played at Northwestern from 2002-05, has returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the Wildcat baseball team head coach Paul Stevens announced Wednesday.
"We’re very excited to have Jon back at Northwestern University after being a player here and moving on to professional baseball," Stevens said. "We feel that he will have a strong relationship with our student-athletes. He’ll be in charge of infielders and hitters and I think that they will be well instructed and well prepared under his guidance."

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney has announced the addition of former Wolverine pitcher and captain Michael Penn (2003-05) to his coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Penn, who was an All-Big Ten first team selection in 2005, replaces Brant Ust, who has been named a player/coach for the Great Britain national team in the upcoming Baseball World Cup.

SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass—Tyler Burgoon (Michigan) of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox earned himself the Russ Ford Award as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Top Relief Pitcher with his spectacular performance on the mound. The 5’10 closer struck out 34 batters in 21.1 innings pitched.
“It was a good feeling knowing your goal’s being accomplished,” said Burgoon, who held himself to high standards coming to the Cape this summer. “It’s one of the goals I set for myself before I came and I had the team and coaches to actually get it done.”

Share The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

BALTIMORE, MD - SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2009 BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge has been nominated for a 2009 SportsTravel Award. Events are nominated and then voted upon by the readers of SportsTravel, the sports world’s event magazine.
The inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, concluded to rave reviews from fans, participants, coaches and elected officials in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. Approximately 17,000 spectators turned out over three days to watch as eight teams representing the BIG EAST squared off against all 10 of the Big Ten’s baseball-playing institutions in NCAA Division I baseball’s first conference challenge event.

Share Chris Webb of Buckeye Nine recently posted an excellent Q and A with Ohio State outfielder Zach Hurley. He was selected in the 45th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins. Hurley’s stock tumbled after an injury to his throwing shoulder during fall workouts. He played every game in the 2009 season missing only one game but was never 100 percent. You really could not tell though as Hurley had an outstanding season hitting .346 with six homers and 53 RBI.

Share Holy Cross head coach Greg DiCenzo has added Gabe Ribas and Jeff Kane to his staff for the 2009-2010 school year. Ribas comes over to Holy Cross from Northwestern where he served as an assistant coach last season. He has also served coaching stints with the IMG Baseball Academy, Bowdoin College, Frozen Ropes Baseball Academy, and Rock Solid Baseball. Ribas was a 14th round selection in 2002 by the San Diego Padres.
