Share The Okotoks Dawgs and the Melville Millionaires have been declared co-champions of the Western Major Baseball League.
The Millionaires won the first game of what was originally scheduled to be a best-of-five series 5-3. Coty Saranthus (Southwest Mississippi CC) got the win, and Mark Hardy (British Columbia) got the loss. The game was tied 3-3 going into the ninth inning, and Kyle Barclay (Erie CC) pinch-hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI single by James Green (Houston-Victoria). Share The Okotoks Dawgs will play the Melville Millionaires in a bid to win their third straight Western Major Baseball League championship. The first two games of the best-of-five final series will be in Okotoks, AB Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13. The third and fourth (if necessary) games will be played in Melville, SK August 14 and 15, and the fifth (if necessary) game will be played in Okotoks.

Share The Okotoks Dawgs swept their series against the Moose Jaw Miller Express, 2-1, 10-5, and 5-4. Jeff Duda (Campbellsville) pitched a four-hit complete game in the first game, struck out 11. The Dawgs trailed 1-0 going into the seventh inning, but they tied it in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Mac Sullivan (USC), and won it on the eighth on an RBI double by Jeremy Shelby (Grambling State). In the third game, Manny Kumar (Grambling State) scored the winning run on a passed ball. The Dawgs will play the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the semifinal playoff round; the series starts Thursday, August 6 at Okotoks.

Share The regular season for the WMBL is over, and the playoffs start on Friday, July 31. The Okotoks Dawgs won the West Division pennant with a 32-13 record, and they will host the Moose Jaw Miller Express in the first playoff round. The Swift Current Indians won the Central Division pennant with a 27-13 record, and they will host Yorkton Cardinals in the first round. The Melville Millionaires won the East Division with a 26-14 record, and will host the Regina Red Sox. The other first-round playoff matchup is Medicine Hat Mavericks at Lethbridge Bulls. Share Jordan Rawlyk (transferring from Monterey Peninsula JC to Sonoma State), Brandon Kaye (transferring from Douglas College to British Columbia) and Matt Bannister (British Columbia) combined for a no-hitter in a mercy-rule-shortened 14-0 win over The Bahamas.
Rawlyk went five innings, struck out seven, walked three. Kaye, who was drafted in the 45th round by the Blue Jays, pitched the sixth inning, and threw only five pitches. Bannister pitched the seventh inning.

Share The Okotoks Dawgs continue to lead the West Division with a 22-10 record. The Dawgs lost road games to the Regina Red Sox and the Medicine Hat Mavericks, then won two home games against the Moose Jaw Miller Express, 14-3 and 6-4. The games against Moose Jaw drew crowds of 1,864 and 1,793. In the 6-4 win, the Dawgs scored five runs in the second inning on an RBI double by C Brett Thomas (California), a two-RBI single by 2B Matt Hart (Santa Ana College), an RBI single by RF Anthony Cros (Northwest Oklahoma State), and a sacrifice fly by CF Jeremy Shelby (Grambling State). Cros’ RBI was the winning run, and Marc Wilson (Campbellsville) got the win, his first of the season. Cros leads the team with a .405 batting average, and a .553 on-base percentage. Dan Britton-Foster (British Columbia) is the leading pitcher for the Dawgs, with a record of 3-0, 1.12 ERA. Read the rest of this entry »

Mark Phillips (Colby College), Logan Todd (Merced College), and Danny Britton-Foster (British Columbia) got the wins. Britton-Foster leads the team with a record of 3-0, 1.16 ERA. At Lubbock, TX:
#1 Lubbock Christian picked up where they left off in the regular season, defeating William Jewell 28-2. The Chaparrals scored seven runs in the second inning, and 18 runs in the eighth inning. William Jewell used six pitchers.

Golden State Athletic Conference – at San Diego: #3 Point Loma Nazarene defeated #11 Fresno Pacific 3-2 (12 innings). SS Tyler Kuehl singled in the winning run for the Sea Lions. Steven Winnick pitched four hitless innings in relief for the win. #24 The Master’s then took Fresno Pacific out of the tournament with a 6-5 win. Point Loma Nazarene and The Master’s play for the championship in Thursday.
Sun Conference – at Fort Myers, FL: #7 Embry-Riddle defeated Savannah College of Art and Design 11-4 for the championship. Joel Blomberg and Austin Goolsby hit home runs for the Eagles. Read the rest of this entry »

Golden State Athletic Conference – at San Diego: #3 PointLoma Nazarene defeated #24 The Master’s 4-0. Andrew Bovich pitched eight shutout innings for the Sea Lions, and Kurt Steinhauer hit two home runs. #11 Fresno Pacific defeated Biola 15-12. Golden State Athletic Conference – at San Diego: #24 The Master’s defeated Azusa Pacific 6-5 (11 innings). #11 Fresno Pacific plays Biola and #3 Point Loma Nazarene plays Azusa Pacific on Tuesday.
Sun Conference – at Fort Myers, FL: In the second round, #7 Embry-Riddle defeated USC Beaufort 11-6; Brandon Roper-Hubbert went 4-5 with four RBI. Savannah College of Art and Design defeated Warner 5-0. Stephen Shackleford pitched a complete-game shutout for the Bees; he scattered eight hits, and struck out nine. He is 7-1, 2.73 ERA.
