CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Mike Rooney, UNC Wilmington

Jr., SS, Cary, N.C./Cary

Rooney batted .556 with six runs scored and five RBI in UNCW’s four games last week. In the Seahawks’ two victories at Old Dominion that clinched a CAA Tournament berth, the junior shortstop went 8-for-10 and scored four times. Rooney is batting .331 for the season.

Rob Kumbatovic, Hofstra

Jr., RHP, Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough

Kumbatovic allowed just four singles and no runs over seven innings as Hofstra blanked William & Mary 3-0 on Saturday. The junior right-hander fanned four and combined with Jeff Guthridge for the Pride’s first shutout since 2007. He earned his team-high fourth win. Read the rest of this entry »

Chris Henderson, George Mason

Henderson batted .640 (16-25) with a homer, five doubles, six RBI and eight runs scored in Mason’s 4-1 week. The junior catcher hit .733 (11-15) in a three-game sweep of Hofstra, while driving in and scoring five. Henderson leads the CAA with a .436 average.

Trevor Knight, James Madison

So., 1B/P, Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield

Knight excelled with the bat and on the mound in JMU’s five games last week. At the plate, Knight batted .600 (15-25) with a double, two triples, four homers, 12 runs scored and 13 RBI. He drove in at least two runs in all five contests and hit .667 as the Dukes won two of three at VCU. Knight also made his first career pitching start on Sunday and allowed just three hits over six shutout innings while fanning six.

Childers batted .522 (12-23) with two homers, six runs scored and 11 RBI in Georgia State’s six games. The senior had back-to-back three-hit games in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Delaware, and tied a school-record by driving in eight runs in the opener.

Bour hit .471 (8-17) and drove in 11 runs in George Mason’s 3-1 week. The junior first baseman was 7-for-13 (.538) with two homers, four runs scored and nine RBI as the Patriots won two of three at William & Mary. He hit .615 (8-13) as the Patriots won two of three at CAA foe ODU, including becoming just the second player in school history to hit for the cycle in Saturday’s 4-2 triumph. It’s week two of CAA baseball. Here’s a quick rundown of the teams in action this weekend.

-Northeastern will hold its annual scrimmage with the Boston Red Sox Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fort Myers. Check out live updates here.

The Huskies will continue their regular season with a doubleheader Sunday against Northwestern in Winter Haven, Fla.

Jason Appel, UNC Wilmington Sr., OF

Appel batted .579 (11-19) with six runs scored and five RBI as UNCW went 4-0 on the road last week. The senior laced a two-out single in the ninth to give the Seahawks a 6-5 victory over VCU on Sunday, extending the nation’s longest winning streak to 20 games. Read the rest of this entry »

The Colonial Athletic Association has released their current players of the week for the period ending on March 12th. George Mason first baseman Justin Bour had a great week in which he went 10-20 at the plate for a .500 average to pick up the Player of the Week award. He also picked up seven home runs on the week (three grand slams), nine runs scored, and only drove in 19 runs. Jeff Hatcher of UNC-Wilmington picked up the Pitcher of the Week award with a complete game three hit shutout on Saturday over VCU. Hatcher’s teammate Daniel Cropper picked up the Rookie of the Week with a 8.1 innings of work on Sunday while only giving up three runs.
