CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Mike Rooney, UNC Wilmington

Jr., SS, Cary, N.C./Cary

Rooney batted .556 with six runs scored and five RBI in UNCW’s four games last week. In the Seahawks’ two victories at Old Dominion that clinched a CAA Tournament berth, the junior shortstop went 8-for-10 and scored four times. Rooney is batting .331 for the season.

Rob Kumbatovic, Hofstra

Jr., RHP, Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough

Kumbatovic allowed just four singles and no runs over seven innings as Hofstra blanked William & Mary 3-0 on Saturday. The junior right-hander fanned four and combined with Jeff Guthridge for the Pride’s first shutout since 2007. He earned his team-high fourth win. Read the rest of this entry »

Henderson batted .640 (16-25) with a homer, five doubles, six RBI and eight runs scored in Mason’s 4-1 week. The junior catcher hit .733 (11-15) in a three-game sweep of Hofstra, while driving in and scoring five. Henderson leads the CAA with a .436 average.

Krieger batted .692 (9-13) with a homer, two triples, five runs scored and seven RBI as George Mason won two of three at VCU last weekend. The senior outfielder had at least two hits and two RBI in each game, including a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI on Saturday.

Trevor Knight, James Madison

So., 1B/P, Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield

Knight excelled with the bat and on the mound in JMU’s five games last week. At the plate, Knight batted .600 (15-25) with a double, two triples, four homers, 12 runs scored and 13 RBI. He drove in at least two runs in all five contests and hit .667 as the Dukes won two of three at VCU. Knight also made his first career pitching start on Sunday and allowed just three hits over six shutout innings while fanning six.

Childers batted .522 (12-23) with two homers, six runs scored and 11 RBI in Georgia State’s six games. The senior had back-to-back three-hit games in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Delaware, and tied a school-record by driving in eight runs in the opener.

Bour hit .471 (8-17) and drove in 11 runs in George Mason’s 3-1 week. The junior first baseman was 7-for-13 (.538) with two homers, four runs scored and nine RBI as the Patriots won two of three at William & Mary. Henderson batted .440 with five doubles, a triple, a homer, four RBI and six runs scored as George Mason went 5-1 last week. He hit .615 (8-13) as the Patriots won two of three at CAA foe ODU, including becoming just the second player in school history to hit for the cycle in Saturday’s 4-2 triumph. Browning batted .647 (11-17) with three doubles, a homer, seven runs scored and four RBI in JMU’s five games last week. Ten of the eleven CAA teams were in action this weekend in  non- conference games. Here’s a quick run down of each team.

-George Mason started the year  4-0 for just the third time in school history. The Patriots competed in the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.  Righty Kevin Crum (1-0 0.00) and second baseman Ryan Soares (.500-1-4) were named the all-tournament team.

-UNC Wilmington started the season off with a three game sweep of Maryland at home.   Outfielder Grayson Evans (.417) had 7 RBI in the series. Read the rest of this entry »

George Mason 5 Towson 4

Towson, Md. – The George Mason baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon when the Patriots scored five runs in the first three innings and then held off Towson over the final six as Mason beat the Tigers, 5-4.

Mason scored in the first when Chris Henderson and Justin Bour hit two-out singles and Scott Krieger brought home Henderson with a single to left. Towson tied the game in the bottom of the inning behind a walk and a double. Mason took the lead for good in the second behind the game’s lone error. Read the rest of this entry »
