“I was just trying to go out and get a W.” That’s what Houston Cougar starting pitcher Michael Goodnight said when asked about his mindset entering Sunday’s game against the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Cougars had dropped the first two games of the series with the Mustangs and were riding an eight game losing streak. They changed their luck on Sunday due in large part to the performance of Goodnight. The freshman RHP tossed seven strong innings while allowing only two earned runs on three hits. The Cal Poly Mustangs rode into Cougar Field Friday night on a six game winning streak and a top 30 ranking to show for their impressive start to the season. LOS ANGELES – Derek Legg scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth Sunday while Charlie Ruiz threw 1 2/3 perfect innings in relief as the Long Beach State 49ers beat the USC Trojans, 5-4, at Dedeaux Field. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore first baseman J.J. Thompson’s double to the gap in right-center field knocked in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Cal Poly completed a comeback from a 6-2 deficit and upset No. 3 Rice 7-6 Saturday night in Baggett Stadium.

Coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs (2-1) also won the first game of Saturday’s day-night doubleheader, 10-3, and captured the season-opening non-conference baseball series, two games to one. Read the rest of this entry »

Receiving 78 points and seven first-place votes, Cal State Fullerton was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2009 Big West Conference crown, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 10 league titles and a conference-best 14 overall. UC Irvine was selected to finish second with 67 points and UC Santa Barbara was picked third after receiving 65 points and one first-place nod.

The CBB continues our countdown to the 2009 College Baseball season with our Top 50 players to watch. We will be providing one player each day (Monday-Saturday) until we reach number 1.

We continue our list with junior righthanded pitcher Steven Fischback from Cal-Poly. He is from Walnut Creek California and graduated from Las Lomas High School. He ended up as a four year letter winner at Las Lomas taking the team to the CIF North Coast Section championship game in 2005 and a semifinalist in 2006. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Five high school players and two from community colleges have signed national letters of intent to further their baseball careers at Cal Poly.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Mustang baseball coach Larry Lee and director of athletics Alison Cone.

The group includes three pitchers, a catcher, one infielder and a pair of outfielders.

“It’s a fairly small recruiting class that will hopefully fulfill our needs for the 2010 baseball campaign,” said Lee. “The combination of quality high school players along with two junior college players hopefully will give us some stability at various positions. We’re hoping that a few of these players will immediately step in and be impact players for us.” Read the rest of this entry »

For the first time since Larry Lee took over as head coach prior to the 2002 baseball season, Cal Poly will play more home games than on the road.

The 2009 Cal Poly baseball schedule announced Tuesday by Lee and director of athletics Alison Cone features 30 home games and 26 on the road.

The Mustangs will host 2003 College World Series champion Rice for a three-game series opening the campaign and also will host Sacramento State and San Francisco for three game non-conference series.

The Corvallis (OR) Knights swept a best-of-three series against the Wenatchee (WA) AppleSox to win their first West Coast Collegiate Baseball League championship. The AppleSox won the championship in 2006 and 2007.

The Knights won the first game of the series 6-4 (11 innings) in Wenatchee. The star of that game was Doug Cherry (Washington), who went 4-5, reached base six times, and was spectacular on defense. He drew a walk in the ninth to bring in the tying run and send the game into extra innings. Bryant Kraus (Portland) batted in the winning run in the 11th. UC Irvine Sweeps New Mexico, 12-1
ALBUQUERQUE, NM Dillon Bell led the Anteaters with a career-high five RBI and Daniel Bibona held the Lobos to a one run as UC Irvine swept New Mexico, 12-1, Sunday at Isotopes Park. Ollie Linton and Ryan Fisher added three RBI apiece as UCI improved to 28-10 overall

Bell was 3 for 5 on the day, including his second home run of the series to pace a 17-hit attack against the Lobos. Linton also led the club, going 4 for 5 while Fisher was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Ben Orloff extended his hitting streak to a team-high 13 games, batting 3 for 4 and Casey Stevenson added three hits, batting 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

New Mexico scored its lone run in the bottom of the first on Mike Brownstein’s solo home run off Bibona.

The Anteaters took a 2-1 lead in the third on Bell’s two-run single to right to score Eric Deragisch and Linton. UC Irvine added five runs in the fifth with a leadoff home run by Linton and a two-run round-tripper by Bell to highlight the frame.
