With Texas locking up the Big 12 regular season championship last weekend, it’s a battle for second place in the conference this weekend. Oklahoma and Texas A&M both sit at 14-10 in conference play, and the two teams face off in Norman this weekend with a potential NCAA host spot on the line. AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 8 Texas Longhorns took advantage defensive lapses by the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies in the first inning to score five runs and hung on for a 5-4 win in the rubber match of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
The UT victory coupled with a loss by Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series against Oklahoma State gave the Horns their fifth Big 12 regular-season title and the third in the last four years.

The Lone Star Showdown this weekend between Texas and Texas A&M will heavily impact the Big 12 conference race. Texas currently leads Kansas State and rival Texas A&M by one game in the conference standings. The two teams will be playing a split series, with the Friday game in College Station and the two remaining games in Austin. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State face off in the Bedlam Series, with Friday’s game to be played at Driller’s Stadium in Tulsa and the other two games at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Week four of WAC play sees Nevada and No. 20 Hawai’i atop the league standings at 7-4. New Mexico State is just a half game behind at 7-5, while San Jose State is 5-3, Louisiana Tech is 5-7 and the two other northern California schools, Sacramento State and defending league champion Fresno State are 2-6. The weekend is highlighted by a key battle in New Mexico between New Mexico State and No. 20 Hawai’i.

Share The 2009 WAC conference schedule kicks off this weekend. Heading into conference play six of the seven WAC teams sport records above .500 with the league heading into the conference play with a combined record of 112-61 (.647 winning %). The league’s best non-conference record belongs to New Mexico State at 25-3. The toughest non-conference schedule belongs to Hawai’i who at 16-9 in conference play picked up arguably the league’s best wins taking three of four from Coastal Carolina. Also among the league’s notable victories are wins over Arizona (Sacramento State), UC-Irvine (Hawai’i), New Mexico (New Mexico State) and Missouri (Nevada).

ShareSAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – One day after being held to five hits in a 6-2 victory, No. 16 Cal Poly exploded for 16 hits en route to a 15-3 triumph over Cal State Bakersfield in the second game of a four-game non-conference baseball series Saturday afternoon before 1,063 in Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs’ fourth straight win improved their record to 13-4 while Cal State Bakersfield, fielding a baseball team for the first time this season, slipped to 4-12. The series shifts to Hardt Field in Bakersfield for games Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday at 2 p.m.

Share Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com checks in today with two articles. The first article is about Cal State-Bakersfield’s new program. Bill Kernan has been put in charge of the program which is his first job in 13 years. He previously served as Cal-State Northridge’s head coach from 1989-1995 where he went 240-154-3 record. After the 1995 season, he resigned to take up play writing at Columbia University. He has since had seven plays produced. Kendall also starts up his Top 25 countdown with Number 25 Oklahoma Sooners. They are coming off a 36-26 record but a disappointing 9-17 record in the Big 12. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The inaugural schedule for the CSUB baseball team, released Monday, features an array of opponents, none bigger than the defending NCAA Division I National Champions, and Valley rival, Fresno State, whom the Roadrunners will take on during a five-game series in early April. Perhaps the most anticipated series of the season will take place Apr. 3-8 with the first three games being played in Fresno and the final two match-ups taking place in Bakersfield on Apr. 7 and 8. The Cal-State Bakersfield University baseball team will begin play in 2009 under Bill Kernan. The team will be compromised of 12 incoming juniors with 13 freshmen coming into the program. Demons sign two to complete ‘09 signing class
Northwestern State baseball head coach J.P. Davis has announced the signing of his final two players for the 2009 season – right handed pitcher Carlos Maese and catcher Daniel Qualls.
Maese, a 6-1, 180-pounder from Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas, earned most valuable player honors of his district as well as being named to the all-academic team.
