MAC East Division Player of the Week
Derek Spencer, Bowling Green, Third Base
Junior, Oregon, Ohio (Clay)
Spencer had at least two hits and homered in every games last week as the Falcons won their series wtih Miami and went 3-1 on the week. Spencer was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored in non-league win over Toledo. He was 4-for-4 with two solo home runs and four runs scored in the series opener with Miami. Krauss had a monster week, belting five home runs in as many games during the week, giving him six homers in his last six games and moving him into a tie for ninth on Ohio’s career home runs list with 31. Five of his eight hits left the park for a slugging percentage of 1.211 and he walked four times, moving him into fifth place on Ohio’s career walks list (102), while helping him to an on-base percentage of .522 for the week. East Division Player of the Week
Tommy Nurre, Miami, First Base
Senior, Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Xavier)
Nurre led Miami to a 4-1 week, including the RedHawks’ first series sweep since April 27-29, 2007. Miami outscored its opponents 55-24 over the five-game week. Nurre was 11-for-20 for the week (.550) and recorded 10 runs and six RBIs while drilling six extra-base hits (four doubles and two home runs). He recorded an impressive 1.050 slugging percentage. Senior, North Lima, Ohio/South Range
Rohan had a career-high five hits and seven RBI in six at-bats and also scored a game-high four runs in the series finale against UNC Greensboro. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth and had his first career grand slam in the seventh. With the two home runs in the game, Rohan is currently tied for fifth in KSU history with 35 home runs. He finished the week with a .588 batting average, 1.059 slugging percentage, nine RBI’s, six runs and two homeruns. Read the rest of this entry »

Share Cleveland, Ohio – Defending MAC Regular Season Champion Kent State and Western Michigan have been chosen by the league’s head coaches to win their respective divisions, released today by the league office. Share John Savage and the baseball program have signed nine high school seniors for 2009-10

LOS ANGELES – UCLA head baseball coach John Savage has announced that nine student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period to attend UCLA and play baseball. Aided by assistant coaches Rick Vanderhook and Steve Pearse, the fifth recruiting class under Savage includes six position players, one pitcher and one two-way player.
The Bruins’ recruiting class is highlighted by three AFLAC All-Americans – right-handed pitcher Scott Griggs, infielder David Nick and catcher Max Stassi. The nine talented ballplayers, currently seniors in high school, will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2009.

Heatley’s pitching shuts down Cardinal squad
The Arkansas baseball team began its annual Cardinal-White series on Sunday afternoon with what started as a pitcher’s duel and ended with a solid 5-2 victory for the White team at Baum Stadium.
Junior Jeremy Heatley, the White squad’s starter, pitched six innings of four hit, two run baseball to pick up the win while his counterpart, junior Christian Kowalchuk was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs and seven hits over six innings.

Kurt Davidson, Akron, C/1B, Sr., North Canton, Ohio (Hoover)
Davidson led the Zips to their first league series victory on the road since 2005 as UA took two of three at Miami this weekend. Including a non-league game against Cleveland State, the senior hit a robust .529 (9-for-17) with 10 RBI, five doubles and a pair of home runs to post a slugging percentage of 1.176 in four games. Additionally, behind six walks, Davidson notched a team-leading on-base percentage of .667 and reached base five times in Sunday’s series finale. During the Zips’ huge offensive weekend, the slugger, who became the school’s all-time home run leader last spring, took the career leads for at-bats, RBI and total bases to further establish himself as one of the greatest hitters to come through the UA program. Share The University of Nevada-Las Vegas has announced their 2008 baseball schedule. The Rebels will open the season on February 22nd when Central Michigan begins a three game set in Vegas. The Rebels will also play two home games against Washington State and a three game series against Maine before heading on the road to play Arizona. They will also host WCC power San Francisco and head to Cal-State Fullerton before heading into conference play. The full schedule is available here.
