CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern Head Baseball Coach Stuart Lake has announced the hiring of Charles Assey as his assistant coach.
“I am just excited about this opportunity,” said Assey. “I have known Coach Lake for a long time and I think a lot of him as a person and as a coach. I know that this program can win, and I am ready to work hard to make it happen.”
Assey is the first coach to join Lake’s staff, and comes to CSU from his post at Presbyterian College. He will serve as the recruiting coordinator, third base coach, and will coach the hitters along with Coach Lake.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern Athletics Director Hank Small announced the hiring of former Buccaneer baseball player, Stuart Lake, as the new head baseball coach, Monday morning.

DANVILLE, Va. – Alex Gregory had three hits, including a home run, and Eric Evans’ pitching led the No. 6 Radford Highlanders past No. 7 seed Charleston Southern, 6-1, in Game A of the 2008 Big South Conference Baseball Championship, May 20 at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville, Va. With the victory, Radford improves to 23-30 and advances to the main double-elimination bracket of the tournament. The Highlanders will play either No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina or No. 2 seed Liberty on Wednesday, depending on the outcome of tonight’s Game B between No. 5 High Point-No. 8 UNC Asheville. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second consecutive season and the third time in the last four years, Coastal Carolina is the No. 1 seed in the Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship, which will be contested May 20-24 at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville, Va. The Chanticleers won the outright 2008 regular-season championship with a 17-3 Conference mark to win their third regular-season Big South baseball crown in four years and fourth in seven seasons. EASTON, Pa.-The Lafayette baseball team swept Sunday’s doubleheader against Stony Brook to take three of four in this weekend’s home-and-home series. Senior Kevin Reese earned his 15th career victory with a 5-1 win in Sunday’s opening game and the Leopards came out on top of a back-and-forth battle to take the second game 7-6. Spokane, Wash. (http://www.gozags.com May 3, 2008) Jason Chatwood hit a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for Gonzaga University Saturday as the Bulldogs defeated the University of San Francisco 6-5 at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane, Wash. The three-game West Coast Conference series between the Zags and Dons is now tied 1-1.
After surrendering a game tying run in the top of the ninth, Gonzaga (28-19, 8-8) entered its half of the ninth inning with the scored knotted at five. The leadoff batter in the inning flied out for the first out of the inning, before Chatwood stepped in. The junior then hit a one-run home run just over the leftfield wall to give the Bulldogs the 6-5 victory. The walk-off was the first of the season for GU and the first since Mark Castellitto’s walk-off against Loyola Marymount University last season. Read the rest of this entry »

The College of Charleston will play against cross town rival Charleston Southern while Alabama will play two games against UAB, Ohio State plays Toledo, Coastal Carolina will play against Wake Forest and Elon. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been unanimously voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite, as voted by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches and Sports Information Directors, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Chanticleers’ junior outfielder David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C.) has been voted the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, while junior teammate Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J.) was voted Preseason Pitcher of the Year by the panel. Share The Citadel picked up an 8-2 victory over the Charleston Southern Bucs on Tuesday night. They received a strong pitching effort from Chris McGuinness (3-2) who pitched five innings while giving up only two unearned runs to grab the win. The Citadel offensive star was Chris Swauger who had three hits including a home run and drove in three runs. Ryan Rowland (3-7) took the loss for Charleston Southern as he gave up five runs in three innings. Chris Krogmeier and Wes Brundridge each picked up two hits in the losing effort. The Citadel will be back in action this weekend when they head to Furman for a Thursday-Saturday while Charleston Southern hosts Radford.

Share Charleston Southern will welcome The Citadel to Buccaneer Field on Wednesday for a non-conference match up between cross town rivals. Charleston Southern enters with a 15-27 record while The Citadel enter with a 22-13 record. The Citadel are expected to start Nick Sprowls will make his first collegiate start. He has pitched 7.0 innings this season with a 2.57 ERA. The Bucs will counter with T.J. Green who is 0-2 with a 3.62 ERA.
