PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior shortstop Jeff Grantham of St. John’s has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while junior RHP Michael Hill of Cincinnati has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Grantham was 10-for-19 (.526) in a 4-1 week for the Red Storm. He scored four times and drove in seven on the strength of three doubles and a home run. In Game 2 against USF, Gratham led off the 10th inning with a walk-off home run, giving STJ a 4-3 win.
Hill hurled a three-hit complete game in leading the Bearcats to a 7-1 win over Seton Hall. He surrendered only three singles and one run, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Hill retired the final 13 Pirates he faced. He also became the first UC pitcher since 1999 to strike out four batters in one inning. Read the rest of this entry »

Old Dominion 13 Northeastern 0
Norfolk, Va. - Junior right-hander Dan Hudson struck out 11 in just over seven innings of work and the Monarchs of Old Dominion scored 13 runs on 16 hits to shutout the Huskies of Northeastern 13-0 at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon. Nine of the Monarchs 16 hits went for extra bases, including two doubles, three triples and four home runs.
With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth, ODU shortstop Gerard Hall took it upon himself to get the Monarchs on the board. Hall opened the inning with a single to right and promptly stole second and third base. Northeastern starter Les Williams struck out the next two Monarch batters, but with Williams pitching from the windup and with right-handed batter Jimmy Miles in the box, Hall stole home sliding up under the tag of NU catcher Frank Pesanello. CINCINNATI– The University of Cincinnati baseball team used two of its top performances by its pitching staff to second a BIG EAST doubleheader sweep against USF, 6-1 and 5-4 at Marge Schott Stadium. Michael Hill struck out seven and yielded four hits on his way to a complete game victory in Game One, while Billy Welsh shut out USF over three and two-thirds innings of relief to lead UC to the win in Game Two. BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior center fielder Seth Williams and sophomore left fielder Dustin Ackley hit two home runs apiece to lead No. 2 North Carolina to a 7-1 season-opening win over Florida Atlantic Friday at FAU Stadium. We enter the opening weekend of the College Baseball season. We will be bringing you an ACC weekend preview throughout the regular season and during the postseason will have previews of every regional. The biggest highlight of the weekend is Wake Forest heading out to Pepperdine for a three game set. We have a great preview on every ACC in our conference preview section broken off by divisions. The College Baseball Blog took some time off for the Holiday so we are catching up on some the schedules that we missed that were released over the last week. Some of the big time programs that have released a schedule are Kansas led by Ritch Price expects to compete for the 2008 Big 12 title and Notre Dame who looks to return to prominence under second year head coach Dave Schrage. CINCINNATI, Ohio—Tony Campana had a career-high four RBI and Cincinnati held off a late Marshall charge, leading the Bearcats to a 12-10 win over the Thundering Herd on Monday night at Marge Schott Stadium. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 18-14, while Marshall falls to 14-17. The Herd has now dropped 12 consecutive games, its longest losing streak since 1999. Cincinnati has won five of its last seven games.
Campana was the leader of a Bearcat offensive attack that totaled 12 hits with two hits and his 40th stolen base of the year. Josh Harrison and Jamel Scott each added two to the cause. John Baird carried the bulk of the load on the mound, grabbing his first career victory with a career-best 6.1 innings of work.
Herd starter Ryan Kiel took the loss for the Herd, which drops his record to 3-3. Chapman and Vincent had three hits apiece to lead Marshall. Cassamassima and Lape also added two hits for the Thundering Herd.
Marshall returns home to play Morehead State Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at University Heights. Cincinnati is back in action on Wednesday, hosting crosstown rival Xavier at 6:30 p.m.

The University of Cincinnati will be opening the season on Febraury 9th against FAU for a three game set. The program at Cincinnati is coming off a 32-26 record last season and they hope to improve on that. The athletic department is doing a great job of getting articles written about the program.
