JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida Director of Athletics Lee Moon announced today that Raymond “Smoke” Laval will take over as the new head baseball coach for the Ospreys. Laval will replace current head baseball coach Dusty Rhodes, who announced his retirement today, effective at the end of the 2010 season.
“We’re excited to have Raymond joining the UNF family,” said UNF President John A. Delaney. “He brings a wealth of experience to the plate and we look forward to him picking up where Dusty left off, continuing to build upon a strong baseball program here at the University.”

Share North Florida head coach Dusty Rhodes is set to retire after the 2010 season. He has overseen the program’s transition from NAIA to Division 1 while compiling a record of 879-420 heading into the upcoming season. He is set to make the announcement on Monday where UNF athletic director Lee Moon will name the successor.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney has announced the addition of former Wolverine pitcher and captain Michael Penn (2003-05) to his coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Penn, who was an All-Big Ten first team selection in 2005, replaces Brant Ust, who has been named a player/coach for the Great Britain national team in the upcoming Baseball World Cup.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF head baseball coach Terry Rooney announced Thursday that former Florida State student assistant coach Dan Scott has joined the Knights as a volunteer assistant coach. The Black and Gold also welcomed former Knight Nick Choto to the staff as the director of baseball operations.
"I’m very excited to get started and to be able to work with a great staff here at UCF," said Scott. "I’m really looking forward to continuing my coaching career and I want to thank coach Rooney for this opportunity with the Knights."

WACO, Texas — Long-time Baylor baseball assistant coach Mitch Thompson has been promoted to assistant head coach, Baylor head coach Steve Smith announced Thursday. Thompson is in his 16th season on Smith’s staff.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former University of Tennessee pitching coach Fred Corral has been hired as the associate head coach and pitching coach for the University of Memphis baseball team, head coach Daron Schoenrock announced Monday. Corral replaces former Tiger pitching coach Michael Federico, who took the pitching coach job at Southern Miss in mid-July.
"While it is always difficult to replace an assistant coach with the loyalty, dedication, expertise and people skills that Coach Federico brought to the program, in his five years with us," said Schoenrock. "I feel we’ve really `hit a home run with the hiring of Fred Corral. Fred will have a huge impact on the pitching staff, the entire team and this program. Our pitchers will benefit from Fred’s experience, his teaching techniques and the person that he is. We are truly fortunate to have him at the University of Memphis."

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – First-year Maryland head baseball coach Erik Bakich announced today the addition of one of the most well-known baseball minds in the state of Maryland to his staff, as former Arundel High School head coach Bernie Walter will join the Terrapins as director of operations.
"Bernie Walter is a baseball coaching legend and someone I have the utmost respect for," said Bakich. "His accolades and achievements over the past four decades speak for themselves, and his addition solidifies a coaching staff that I am extremely proud of. Bernie is a proven winner and this sends another message that Maryland Baseball is creating a new identity, as well as making a strong commitment to being a contender in the ACC and on a national stage.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today (Aug. 14) the hiring of Rick Heller as the 28th head baseball coach in the 113-year history of the Sycamore program.
“It is with great excitement that we announce the addition of Rick Heller as head baseball coach at Indiana State,” Prettyman said. “Coach Heller’s teams have had a tremendous history of success both on the field and in the classroom. We welcome coach Heller and his wife Rachelle to the Sycamore family and look forward to his leadership of our baseball program.”

STANFORD, Calif.– Stanford Baseball announced the hiring of 16-year coaching veteran Rusty Filter as the team’s assistant and pitching coach. Filter, who tutored 2009 National Player of the Year Stephen Strasburg, takes over for Dave Nakama, who was named the top assistant at the University of Washington.
"We are really excited for Coach Filter to join our staff," said Head Coach Mark Marquess, who will be entering his 34th season in 2010. "We are fortunate to get a coach with his talent and experience to come aboard. I think our pitchers will truly benefit from his pitching philosophy."

SEATTLE – Former Seattle Mariners catcher Bill Haselman has been named the Washington baseball team’s volunteer assistant coach, completing the staff of new head coach Lindsay Meggs.
Haselman, who spent 13 years in the Major Leagues, joins Meggs and assistant coaches Dave Nakama and Greg Moore on the Washington staff. Haselman will coach the Huskies’ catchers, assist Nakama with the hitting and coach first base during games.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland baseball head coach Erik Bakich announced today that Nolan Neiman will join the 2009-10 baseball staff as a volunteer assistant. The hire completes the coaching staff, with Bakich having previously hired Sean Kenny as pitching coach and Dan Burton as recruiting coordinator.
"Nolan Neiman is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff and will do an outstanding job on the field as well as administratively," said Bakich. "His experience coaching catchers, hitters and pitchers will be a great asset in the development of our players. His extensive background with camps and clinics will also be an invaluable addition in generating interest in Maryland baseball throughout the mid-Atlantic."
