CARY, N.C. - North Carolina took a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and never looked back as they dispatched Coastal Carolina by a final score of 14-4. UNC led Coastal Carolina 12-0 before Coastal Carolina was able to finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs. UNC will take on the winner of the UC-Irvine/LSU Super Regional.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Seminoles advanced to Omaha behind an 11-4 victory over Wichita State. After dropping the first game of the series 10-7, Florida State bounced back to take games two and three and advance to their 19th College World Series but first CWS appearance since 2000. Florida State will take on Stanford in the opening game.
CARY, N.C. (AP) - Alex White threw seven strong innings and Seth Williams homered to lead North Carolina past mistake-prone Coastal Carolina 9-4 on Saturday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cary Super Regional.
Williams, Kyle Seager and Kyle Shelton drove in two runs apiece for the Tar Heels (50-12), who turned the Chanticleers’ season-high six errors into six unearned runs and moved within one victory of their third straight trip to the College World Series.
White (10-3) was a major reason for that. He struck out six and allowed eight hits while topping out his fastball at 96 mph and hitting the mid-90s from his first inning through his last in his second straight strong performance in the NCAA tournament. Read the rest of this entry »
CARY, NC — The #2 national seed North Carolina Tar Heels (49-12, 22-7 ACC) host the Big South champion Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (50-12, 17-3 Big South) at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. Both teams went 3-0 in their regionals last weekend with UNC defeating Mount St. Mary’s and UNC-Wilmington and Coastal Carolina defeating Columbia, Alabama and East Carolina. CONWAY, S.C. - Junior right-hander Justin Bristow scattered four hits over seven innings and allowed one run and struck out seven as second-seeded East Carolina eliminated third-seeded Alabama from the Conway Regional 16-1 Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium.

CONWAY, S.C. - East Carolina senior pitcher T.J. Hose tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout to lead the Pirates to a 9-0 victory over Columbia in an NCAA Conway Regional elimination game Saturday afternoon.

The Coastal Carolina baseball squad will be hosting a regional for the second straight year but the difference this season is that the Chanticleers will be the playing at their real home field. They will be joined by East Carolina, Alabama, and Columbia. Coastal Carolina has a record of 47-12 while going 17-3 in the Big South. East Carolina enters with a 40-19 mark while going 13-11 in Conference USA. The Crimson Tide come in with a 34-26 record with a 16-14 record in a tough SEC conference. DANVILLE, Va. - Liberty freshman starter Stephen Evans limited No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina to three hits and the No. 2 seed Flames pounded out 13 runs and 14 hits in a 13-1 win over the Chanticleers in Game 10 of the 2008 Royal Purple Big South Conference Baseball Championship, forcing a necessary Game 11 to determine the Big South Tournament champion. Thought this would be a good time to do a follow up on some of the freshmen who have been contributing to their respective teams, as the regular portion of the season has concluded and conference tourneys are ready to begin.
I like to use OPS percentage as a gauge as the equation includes power factors as well as on-base frequency. I have also included the HR and Extra-base hits frequencies to show a player propensity for delivering a big hit.
