Texas 11, Oklahoma 10
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Sophomore David Hernandez chipped an 0-2 offering for an RBI single to cap a three-run rally and lead the Texas Longhorns to a come-from-behind 11-10 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship baseball action at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Saturday morning
With Texas trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Danks and Kyle Russell drew walks from Jake McCarter to leadoff the frame. Chase Anderson came in to pitch for the Sooners and induced a pop up on a bunt attempt by Russell Moldenhauer for the first out. Brandon Belt reignited the rally with a single to rightfield, plating Danks and trimming the lead to 10-9. Preston Clark struck out looking to bring Hernandez to the plate with two outs. Hernandez swung at strike two in the dirt, but a wild pitch allowed Russell to score from third and put Belt in scoring position. Hernandez golfed the next pitch into centerfield for the game-winning run. Read the rest of this entry »

Bryan Roy who writes for The Wildcat Online (Univ. of Arizona) checks in with an article about how the uniform start date has been bad for college baseball. He states that it has hurt the student-athletes chances in the classroom. My biggest problem with this statement is that the Northern schools have had to deal with this for years so why should the Southern schools get away with it? The full article is available here.

With the Academic Progress Rate as the basis for sweeping changes recently enacted by the NCAA under the guidance of a committee called the Academic Enhancement Group, that included coaches and administrators, college baseball at the Division 1 level may see the advantages southern schools have enjoyed in the past slowly diminish. Let me qualify the term “slowly” meaning a snails pace.
Four major ingredients come into play and serve several purposes above and beyond the APR. The first one is the Uniform Start Date, which in 2008 is February 22. Up to this season, many southern and west coast programs typically started their season in early February. Read the rest of this entry »

This letter was written by Coach Polk of Mississippi State University. Coach Polk has been a supporter of College Baseball during his long coaching career. This letter is very lengthy but very detail. Please take the time to read it and leave your comments.
Allow me to first of all apologize for the extreme length of this letter, but I deem it necessary to fully express my thoughts which are reflective of the concerns of a majority of our college baseball coaches (NCAA-I), our student-athletes, their respective family members, and those that care about the value and worth of intercollegiate baseball.
All educators, which includes coaches, must first gain the attention of those with whom they are communicating so they are fully aware who the communicator is and what credentials that person possesses.
My name is Ron Polk, and I am the head baseball coach at Mississippi State University which is a member of the Southeastern Conference. As you read this letter, you will quickly ascertain that my grammar is not the best, nor is my sentence structure and punctuation. For, I am just a baseball coach.
