RICHARDSON, Texas –– The University of Texas at Dallas senior third baseman Cody Ross and Sul Ross State University junior shortstop Javier Arrieta earned player of the year honors, while University of Texas at Tyler senior right-hander Brett Holland, Hardin-Simmons University senior right-hander Kyle Barton and Concordia Texas University junior right-hander Michael Johnson earned pitcher of the year accolades to highlight the 2009 American Southwest Conference baseball awards, following a division-only vote by head coaches, the conference office announced on Wednesday (May 6).

Mike Garnder holds the career-wins record at Concordia Texas with 241.

AUSTIN, Texas — After 10 successful seasons with the Concordia University Texas baseball program, all-time wins leader Mike Gardner will transition from coaching to accept a full-time teaching position with the Kinesiology Department at Concordia. Gardner will begin his new position as an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology on July 1, 2009.

Chris Biguenet, 2B, Sr., Texas-Dallas

Texas-Dallas senior second baseman Chris Biguenet (Plano,TX / Plano Senior HS) homered in four straight games – all wins – and drove in a combined 10 runs against Texas Wesleyan and East Division opponent LeTourneau. Biguenet, who batted 8-for-18 on the week and scored five times, drove in at least two runs in each game.

Head Coach Mike Gardner sets Career Wins Mark

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia University Texas baseball team picked up a 4-2 win over Southwestern University today to improve to 16-15 on the season. Tornados head coach Mike Gardner picked up his 235th career win at CTX to become the all-time wins leader in school history. Before the game Gardner was tied with former Tornados head coach Jack Faszholz (1979-1990) for the most career wins. He also reaches the career feat faster, doing so in only ten seasons.

Texas-Dallas senior outfielder Jared Smith (New Caney, TX / Tyler JC) went 7-for-15 with three home runs, two doubles and 12 RBIs over four games. Louisiana College senior outfielder David Roux ( Denham Springs, LA / DSHS) went 11-for-21 with five home runs and 11 RBIs over five games. Roux added three doubles and scored 10 times. In a three-game series with Schreiner, Roux blasted four home runs.

Senior Lex Wolfe (Lakewood, N.J.) was named as the first American Southwest Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week of the 2009 season by the conference office on Monday.

Wolfe went seven innings in Saturday’s 10-3 win over Trinity, allowing no runs, just four hits and striking out nine batters in the process.

With Div 1 baseball starting on February 20, I grew tired of waiting for Division 1 to start so I drove out to Tyler, Texas to take in opening weekend for The Easton Classic. The four teams that participated are  UT-Tyler, UT-Dallas, Concordia (Austin) and Trinity (San Antonio). With the help of Asst SID of UT-Tyler the trip was well worth the drive.

McMurry and Texas-Tyler have been picked to win 2009 ASC baseball division titles

RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University and the University of Texas at Tyler have been predicted to win 2009 American Southwest Conference baseball division titles, it was announced by the ASC office on Tuesday (Jan. 27) after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Joseph Villegas, Concordia University Texas’ Tom Williams, Hardin-Simmons University’s Kyle Barton, the University of the Ozarks’ Cory Briggs and Bruce Cameron, and UT Tyler’s Blake Booher all earned preseason individual honors.

ABILENE, Texas -Three times a host, three times a champ. McMurry played small ball Sunday to defeat Concordia-Texas 4-1 in the American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship at Walt Driggers Field. Dakota Smith pitched a complete game and McMurry used timely hitting to win its fourth conference championship in school history.

McMurry is 3-for-3 when hosting the ASC postseason tournament now after winning at Driggers Field in 1998, 2004 and 2008. The program’s other title came in 2001 at the University of Dallas when McMurry defeated Hardin-Simmons.

Game 3: #6 UT-Tyler 6, Mississippi College 3 (Choctaws eliminated)

ABILENE, Texas – Facing elimination, Texas-Tyler rebounded from a Friday loss to eliminate Mississippi College in a 6-3 win at Walt Driggers Field Saturday. UTT and MC both lost its respective opening games in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round Friday but the Patriots avoided elimination and will play the loser of the winner’s bracket game between Concordia-Texas and McMurry.

Game 4: McMurry 9, Concordia-Texas 7

ABILENE, Texas – Head coach Lee Driggers said after a Friday win that he didn’t think McMurry was in the driver’s seat. However, after a 9-7 win over Concordia-Texas in the winner’s bracket games Saturday, McMurry will enter championship Sunday as the only team without a loss in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round.

Game 5 (Semifinal): Concordia-Texas 7, UT-Tyler 3 (UT-Tyler eliminated)

ABILENE, Texas – For the second time in two days the Concordia-Texas Tornados knocked off the nationally-ranked UT-Tyler Patriots and moved on to the championship game Sunday. The Patriots took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but CTX countered with two runs apiece in the second, third, and fourth innings and held on for a 7-3 win in the American Southwest Conference Championship Round.
