Xavier Baseball Summer League Winners

CINCINNATI - Several members of the Xavier baseball team have had a successful summer break playing in summer leagues in the area. Congratulations to Billy O’Conner, Steve Brown, Ryan Bellamy and Charlie Leesman, members of the Cincinnati Steam, the 2008 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League Champions. Danny Rosenbaum was a member of the North Woods League Champion Thunder Bay Border Cats. Additionally, several Musketeers were named to All-League as well as All-Star teams. ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Every journey has its starting point. Even in life, when you’re thirsty for a refreshing beverage, you need to plan a trip in order to acquire what you’re looking for. Well, that might not be the most important event in a person’s life, but it sets the stage for how Terry Rooney evolved into UCF’s fifth head baseball coach since the program’s inception in 1973.

Rooney’s path growing up seemed to have one road with a sign that read “Baseball” and it pointed straight ahead. A New England boy born into a family that already included two brothers and a sister, baseball seemed to fill the little tike’s need for enjoyment perfectly.

The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out press releases for the rest of the awards for the season. The MVP of the league was AJ Pollock of Notre Dame. He ended up finishing second in the league in batting average while leading the league in Slugging Percentage. The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out two great articles on the MVP of the league which was AJ Pollock of Notre Dame and the Batting Champ in Jimmy Cesario of Houston. Pollock finished the season leading the league in hits, doubles, and slugging percentage while finishing second in the league in batting average behind Jimmy Cesario. Read the rest of this entry »

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - College basketball is fast approaching. Players across the country have been hitting the courts daily to prepare for preseason practices. And fans are eager to check out their school’s new recruits in action. One of those fans is UCF assistant baseball coach Cliff Godwin.

Coming over from LSU where he was the Tigers hitting coach, Godwin is now serving as the Knights’ hitting coach while also leading up the program’s recruiting efforts. A graduate of East Carolina University, Godwin grew up in the heart of the North Carolina-Duke rivalry. With no Major League clubs located in the state and his family already involved in basketball, it is no wonder why he has a love of the hard courts.

But there’s no reason to remain anxious for that first pitch in a stadium filled with dizzying aromas of burgers and leather gloves.

A brand new coaching staff will await UCF fans on Feb. 20, and www.UCFAthletics.com sat down with each of them so the community could get to know what these Knights are all about. Volunteer assistant coach Aaron Smith happily agreed to serve as part one of this four-part series, and he quickly admitted that the state of Florida is a whole new experience.

Polk will be Volunteer Assistant Coach; Walker becomes Director of Baseball Operations

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —– Legendary Mississippi State baseball coach Ron Polk, the winningest coach in the history of the Southeastern Conference, has joined the UAB baseball staff as a volunteer assistant coach, according to an announcement Tuesday by UAB head coach Brian Shoop.

Shoop coached under Polk at Mississippi State from 1983-89 where the Bulldogs won three SEC championships and made one trip to the College World Series together. Polk retired from Mississippi State following his 29th season at the school in 2008. He ranks seventh all-time in NCAA career head coaching victories.

Mark Kingston of Tulane University will be leaving the school to head to Illinois State to become the head coach in the 2010 season. He will serve as the head coach designee in 2009 under outgoing coach Jim Brownlee. Kingston was a member of Rick Jones staff since the 2001 season and becomes the fifth head coach that served under Jones to become a head coach. Read the rest of this entry »

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Bourne right-hander Bryce Stowell (Cal-Irvine) came within two outs of pitching a complete-game shutout Friday night against Wareham and the performance earned him Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week honors for the seven-day period ending July 12. The 6-2, 205-pound native of La Habra, Calif., now boasts the Cape Cod Baseball League’s lowest ERA – 0.36 – after working 26 innings in which he struck out 31 batters, walked only five and scattered 10 hits. In his 2-0 victory over Wareham, he struck out eight, did not walk a batter and doled out seven hits. Stowell was 8-3 with a 3.26 ERA at Cal-Irvine this spring as a sophomore. Durham, N.C. - USA Baseball announced today the naming of Tulane’s Rick Jones as head coach of the 2009 USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate).

Jones is the head coach at Tulane University in New Orleans, La., and he is coming off a 2008 campaign that was his 15th at the helm of the Green Wave baseball program. Over his career at Tulane, Jones has tallied a 639-306-2 record (.674), including a 257-127-2 mark in Conference USA play, which is more wins than any other league school. Inheriting a team that had been to the NCAA Regionals seven times in its previous 101 years of existence, Jones took the Green Wave to the postseason in his first season, again in 1996 and every year from 1998-2007.
