CoppellChampionship August 14th- For the 3rd time in their six year history, the Coppell Copperheads were crowned Texas Collegiate League Champions on Friday night. With a one game lead in the best-of-three championship series, the Copperheads traveled to Victoria where they defeated the league’s number one seed, 13-11, to clinch the 2009 Championship.

COPPERHEAD LOGO August 13- If the fences at The Snake Pit in Coppell, Texas were 337 feet, Generals 1B Mike Davis (Lambuth) would’ve given Victoria a 7-5 lead with a grand slam in the top of the 9th. Fortunately for the Copperheads, the fences measured up to 340 feet, giving Copperheads CF James Foster (Wofford) just enough room to make the final out of the game, preserving a 5-3 victory in the first game of the best-of-three Championship Series.

Although they are the two newest teams in the Texas Collegiate League, the Victoria Generals and East Texas Pump Jacks finished the 2009 regular season far ahead of the rest of the pack. The two teams took home the majority of the awards, including eight of the 12 All-League selections.

LaFleur Coppell Copperheads 7 East Texas Pump Jacks 6

The East Texas Pump Jacks won more games this summer than last, finished higher in the standings, and earned home-field advantage for the playoff series in team history.

Now the Pump Jacks have to work doubly hard to achieve a different playoff result.

Bryan-College Station, TX (August 7, 2009) –

The first pitch thrown by Travis Smith at Driller Park in Kilgore, Texas last night set a Bombers franchise record. The start by Smith was his tenth of the season, breaking a record set by 2008 Bomber, Jim McGonigle. When Smith struck out Mike Petello to lead off the sixth inning, he tied the Bombers franchise record of strike outs in a single season at 51 with Casey Whitmer. The strike out for Smith also set the record for innings pitched in a single season set the night before by Drew Flaniken. However, Smith’s bid for his first Bomber win came up short, as the Bombers fell 8-6.

Walkoffhit East Texas Pump Jacks 10 Brazos Valley Bombers 9

The East Texas Pump Jacks staked their claim to second place on Wednesday night in a wild, 10-9 win over the Brazos Valley Bombers at historic Driller Park. In a dramatic climax with Big 12 written all over it, Brett Nicholas lined a 3-2, two-out pitch through the left side with the bases loaded, scoring Ryan Oesterle and Greg Fontenot to win the game in walk-off fashion.

With the debut of the new Field View Section at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, the Brazos Valley Bombers set the Texas Collegiate League attendance record for Tuesday night with 1,372 fans. The Field View Section was an instant hit, as fans had the opportunity to enjoy $0.50 beer all night long.

Hinojosa, Juengel and Varner Earn Week 8 Honors

Hinojosa used the week to demonstrate his prowess both at the plate and on the mound. He batted .333 with two home runs, vaulting himself into a tie for the league lead in homers. The two-way star also picked up a pair of saves as the Bombers’ closer, grabbing a share of the TCL lead in that category as well. The sophomore starred at Texarkana College last spring and will be headed to Texas A&M in the fall.

After waiting through two days of heavy rain, the Brazos Valley Bombers and Coppell Copperheads finally squared off in a doubleheader today. The Bombers were victorious in the opener, winning 4-2, but lost the nightcap 4-0.

Jake Luce, McKinney Marshals

Luce led all hitters for the week with a .500 average (8-for-16), adding two doubles and a triple for a .750 slugging percentage. He scored five runs and drove in seven more, accounting for 44% of the Marshals’ runs in the five games he played this week. The Jefferson College outfielder will be returning to the Vikings for his sophomore year in the fall.
