HAVANA, Cuba – University of Alabama baseball senior Kent Matthes had two hits, including a two-run home run, and the Crimson Tide got some excellent relief pitching and late-inning defense to throw out the winning run at the plate in the bottom ninth inning to preserve a 3-3 tie with the Cuban Collegiate All-Stars in game one of this historic “Friendship Tournament” at the Stadium of Latin America in Havana, Cuba Tuesday afternoon.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Due to the devastation from multiple hurricanes during the past few months, the Samford baseball program has had to cancel its trip to Havana, Cuba, scheduled for Oct. 17-21, the athletics department announced on Thursday.

The United States Olympic Baseball team is taking on the Cuban Olympic team in the semifinals of the Olympic Baseball Tournament at 6 am Eastern time on Friday. The United States is expected to start San Diego State junior to be Stephen Strasberg to the mound where he was outstanding against the Netherlands in his only Olympic start. BEIJING — Playing for the first time under the new extra-innings rule for Olympic competition, Cuba scored twice in the top of the 11th inning with the U.S. only able to plate one run in the bottom half, giving Cuba a 5-4 victory over the U.S. Olympic Baseball Team on Friday afternoon at the Wukesong Main Field. The USA Olympic Baseball team takes on Cuba tonight at 11:30 pm Eastern time. The game can be watched online for free by clicking here.
Trevor Cahill will take the ball for the US team and Cuba will send Luis Miguel Rodriguez.
UPDATE #1: Cuba and Team USA is tied at 2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
UPDATE #2: Cuba and USA start the tenth inning tied at 3. Cuba’s Bell hit a leadoff triple to center field to start the inning off well. Kevin Jepsen is able to get the next two batters to strikeout and then gets the final batter of the inning to ground out to third base. Team USA is coming up to bat right now.
UPDATE #3: Taylor Teagarden gets hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the tenth off well for Team USA. Jason Donald lays a bunt down to get Teagarden to second with one out. Cuba gets the next two guys to pop up. We are off to the 11th inning. This is going to be the first time the new rules of having two runners on base to start the inning is in effect.
UPDATE #4: Cuba scores two runs in the top of the 11th while USA only scores one in the bottom of the 11th so the Cubans stay undefeated while USA drops to 1-2 in the tourney.

Alfredo Despaigne
The defending Olympic champion Cuba picked up a 4-2 victory over Japan to open up their 2008 Olympics. The Cuban team was led by Alfredo Despaigne who went 3-4 with three RBI while Alexei Bell went 2-4 with two RBI. Norge Luis Vera started the game where he went six innings allowing two runs and seven hits. Pedro Luis Lazo pitched the final three innings allowing two hits to pick up the save. (HAARLEM, Netherlands) – Jared Clark’s leadoff home run in the top of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie, and Kendal Volz (Baylor; Bulverde, Texas) notched his fifth save of the tournament as the USA Baseball National Team defeated Cuba 4-1 Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 24th Haarlem Baseball Week at Pim Mullier Stadium. Cuba took advantage of some sloppy Team USA defense to pull out an 8-2 victory in the final game of the first round of the World Port Tournament. Alfredo Despaigne went 2-3 with two homers and five RBI. His second homer came in the seventh inning when Cuba scored five runs to make a 3-2 game in a 8-2 advantage. Scott Gorgen (UC-Irvine) started for Team USA and gave them six solid innings while giving up three runs (one earned) but struck out ten batters without allowing a walk. Cuba ended up getting to reliever Josh Romanski (San Diego) for five runs in two innings of work. Yulieski Gonzalez started for the Cuban team and gave them 7.1 innings while giving up both runs. Arley Sanchez relieved Gonzalez while going 1.1 perfect innings before being lifted for Vicyohandri Odelin who got the final out of the game. Team USA was led on offense by Pedro Alvarez who homered for the third straight game while going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Team USA is back in action on Tuesday when they start the second round of the round robin tournament with Japan at 1 p.m. Eastern. Team USA is currently in a tie for second place with Chinese Taipei.
