BillyGodwinECU GREENVILLE, N.C. - Thirty-six home games at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium, including the Seventh-Annual Keith LeClair Classic, highlight the 2010 East Carolina baseball schedule announced Wednesday morning by head baseball coach Billy Godwin.

The 2010 slate features 17 games against teams that earned a bid to the 2009 NCAA Regionals; 32 against teams with 30-plus wins; five that topped the 40-plus win plateau; two that made trips to the College World Series and five that finished ranked in the Top 25 polls, including three in the Top 10.

DannyHultzen Rivals.com College Baseball editor Kendall Rogers has put out an article detailing five programs that are rising in prestige and five that are starting to fall off the map. The programs that he sees coming on are: TCU, Virginia, East Carolina, Kansas and Ohio State. The five programs that are starting to fall are: Arizona, Baylor, Tulane, Nebraska, and California. He has some interesting commentary on each team as I can see his reasoning on all the programs except for one in Baylor.

JaredAvchen The Virginia Cavaliers baseball team held a scrimmage on Tuesday evening where Robert Morey tossed 4.2 innings scattering four hits and allowing one run. He also had five strikeouts.

The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

PP7_JustinGrimm The Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week for July 26 through August 1st is Cotuit’s Justin Grimm(Georgia). On August 1st, Grimm was able to stymie a high-powered Bourne offense, surrendering only one earned run in a 6-2 win. Over his seven and a third innings of work, the 6-4 flamethrower scattered six hits while striking out 10. Grimm’s command was excellent: he did not walk a batter all night.

billcilentoWake Forest new head coach Tom Walter has announced that he has hired Bill Cilento as an assistant coach. He comes over from Brown University where he spent the last three seasons. He brought the Brown Bears to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 where they led the Ivy League in every offensive category including winning the team batting average title by 39 points. The Cape Cod Times does an excellent job covering the Cape Cod Baseball League day in and day out. They have been putting out some outstanding features in the recent days that you should check out.

The first article looks at Brewster public address announcer Jim Nowak who has been around the Cape Cod League for the past 46 seasons starting as a bat boy with Chatham in 1963. He even remembers when former Yankee player Thurman Munson was playing in the league. Read the rest of this entry »

joshhollidayWe have two major coaching changes in college baseball today. The biggest news is former Arizona State recruiting coordinator Josh Holliday will replace Erik Bakich at Vanderbilt. Bakich left last week for the head coaching job at Maryland. This is huge news as Holliday recruited the number 1 class in the country for this past year’s freshman class and has also been with Georgia Tech where he brought in some excellent players like Matt Wieters. The other big coaching change is East Carolina’s recruiting coordinator Link Jarrett moving over to Auburn to fill that position also. Read the rest of this entry »

The first Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week of 2009 hails from Bourne, with Braves pitcher Eric Cantrell securing that honor. Cantrell put on a masterful performance in the Braves’ first win of the year, a 5-1 victory over Wareham, recording eight shutout innings and improving to 1-0 on the season.
