CONWAY, S.C. - Junior right-hander Justin Bristow scattered four hits over seven innings and allowed one run and struck out seven as second-seeded East Carolina eliminated third-seeded Alabama from the Conway Regional 16-1 Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium.

CONWAY, S.C. - East Carolina senior pitcher T.J. Hose tossed a four-hit, complete game shutout to lead the Pirates to a 9-0 victory over Columbia in an NCAA Conway Regional elimination game Saturday afternoon.

CONWAY, S.C. - Top-seeded Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the top of the fifth and then added six more in the eighth as the Chanticleers powered their way to a 10-2 victory over fourth-seeded Columbia in the first game of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Conway Regional Friday, May 30 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. With the win, Coastal advances to play the winner of the East Carolina/Alabama game at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 31. Columbia will face the loser of the East Carolina/Alabama game at 1 p.m., on Saturday. The Coastal Carolina baseball squad will be hosting a regional for the second straight year but the difference this season is that the Chanticleers will be the playing at their real home field. They will be joined by East Carolina, Alabama, and Columbia. Coastal Carolina has a record of 47-12 while going 17-3 in the Big South. East Carolina enters with a 40-19 mark while going 13-11 in Conference USA. The Crimson Tide come in with a 34-26 record with a 16-14 record in a tough SEC conference. LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Tyler Mickits hit a two-run home run and Matt Lea, Neil Holland and Zack Pitts combined on a three-hit shutout, as the University of Louisville Cardinals blanked Morehead State 2-0 Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

After catcher Jeff Arnold reached on an infield single to lead off the fifth inning and moved to third on a throwing error, Mickits belted his first home run of the season deep to right center to put the Cards (27-16) on top 2-0 for the only scoring of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

A pair of freshmen have been honored as the Conference USA Baseball Players of the Week. After a highly-productive week that included leading his team to a conference series victory on the road, Marshall freshman designated hitter Victor Gomez has been named Conference USA Hitter of the Week. Going into this weekend the marquee matchup in Conference USA was Houston at Southern Miss as both teams positioned themselves for seeding at the C-USA Tournament and NCAA berths. However, the home-standing Golden Eagles won all three matchups, including a pair of one-run games to move ahead of the Cougars in the league standings. Tulane won two games at Memphis, with the third game being rained out. UCF surprised Rice on Friday night and played them tough the next two days, but the Owls took back-to-back one-run victories. Rice has continued to distance itself from the rest of the pack in Conference USA. The No. 7 Owls swept a three-game series from No. 24 East Carolina to improve to 13-2 in league play. With second place Houston dropping two-of-three at UAB, Rice now owns a 3.5 game lead in the conference standings. Southern Miss and Tulane renewed their long-standing rivalry and the home standing Green Wave took two of three on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Tallahassee, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (32-3) captured its first regular season series victory over intra-state rival and No. 24 Florida (24-13) since 2005 with a 4-2 win Tuesday night. A new Dick Howser Stadium crowd of 6,737 were on hand to see senior Ryan Strauss pick up his second straight win over the Gators this year while throwing his first career complete game.

“Florida State, Florida is enough said,” added head coach Mike Martin on taking the season series from the Gators. “Florida has a great ball club and we were very fortunate to win. After leading No. 24 East Carolina to a series win at No. 20 Southern Miss over the weekend, Pirates senior C Corey Kemp has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week. Houston sits atop the Conference USA baseball standings after sweeping a three-game series from No. 25 UCF at Cougar Field. UH is just ahead of Rice, which swept a three-game series at Memphis. East Carolina won two-of-three at Southern Miss, while Marshall and Tulane each won one game before tying on Sunday.

It was quite a week for the East Carolina Pirates. After opening a five-game schedule with a wild 20-13 win at Old Dominion, ECU picked up a road win at Virginia Commonwealth and then returned home for the annual Keith LeClair Classic. Bad weather forced Friday’s games to be cancelled, setting up a Saturday doubleheader. The Pirates responded, defeating Pittsburgh in the first game and then knocking off No. 15 Michigan, 6-5, in the second game. On Sunday, ECU downed an always-tough Georgia Southern team, 9-3, to capture the tournament title. Brandon Henderson batted .556 (5-for-9) in the tournament, while Ryan Wood extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Read the rest of this entry »

Due to the NCAA’s common start date rule, the baseball season is getting underway a couple of weeks later this year, but opening day has nearly arrived. All nine C-USA baseball teams will be in action this Friday. Tulane will play its first games on campus since the 2006 NCAA Super Regional when it opens the bEast Carolina's Drew Schieberrand-new Greer Field at Turchin Stadium against Illinois-Chicago. Two of C-USA’s nationally-ranked teams open with three-game series’ at ranked opponents, as No. 24 East Carolina visits No. 2 South Carolina and No. 3 Rice travels to No. 13 Long Beach State. Houston, Southern Miss, UAB and UCF each host weekend series.
