Share Collin Whitchurch of The Daily Eastern News has a good article looking at the summer of the Eastern Illinois baseball players. They had guys in leagues from Cape Cod all the way to Texas. They didn’t disappoint as Josh Mueller had an excellent summer with the Wareham Gatemen which has seen many scouts already calling Eastern Illinois coach Jim Schmitz.

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Longhorns demonstrated their offensive firepower with a season-high runs total to defeat the Texas State Bobcats, 12-2, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk field.
The Longhorns were led offensively by freshman Kevin Lusson who went 4-for-4 and with a walk on the night and scored five runs. Lusson had two doubles and two RBI. All of these numbers were career-highs for the Austin native.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 5, today. Eastern Illinois senior outfielder Brett Nommensen was named National Hitter of the Week, while Michigan State senior right-handed pitcher Nolan Moody was named National Pitcher of the Week. Brett Nommensen, OF • Sr., 5-10, 190 • Fox Grove, Ill. • Eastern Illinois
Nommensen earned his second OVC Player of the Week honor of the season after hitting .769 (10-of-13) with seven runs scored, two dobules, three home runs and nine RBI in four Eastern Illinois wins last week. He reached base safely in 14 of his 17 plate appearances during the week, including in each of his first 13 at-bats of the week. In five games last week, Kreke hit .579 (11-for-19) with seven runs scored, a double, triple, three home runs and 12 RBI as the Panthers compiled a 4-1 record. Brodie Greene went 4-for-5 and Nick Anders hit two home runs to lead No. 3 Texas A&M to a 13-7 win over No. 5 Baylor Sunday afternoon before 3,880 fans at Olsen Field.
Greene and Anders powered a 15-hit attack by the Aggie offense, which saw five players record at least two hits and two–Kevin Gonzalez and Joe Patterson–each drive in three runs.

The Lumberjack baseball team kept the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at bay for the majority of the afternoon, but MVSU was able to scrape across a run in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a season-opening 4-3 win over SFA at the rain-soaked ULM Warhawk Classic.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — For the second year in a row, Jacksonville State has been picked as the preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. CHARLESTON, Ill. – Seventeen home dates in the month of April and five weekend series at Coaches Stadium highlight Eastern Illinois baseball’s 2009 schedule, announced by head coach Jim Schmitz.
Six- and nine-game homestands comprise a good deal of the April slate, and 17 of EIU’s total 22 games that month are to be played at Coaches Stadium. Eastern opens its home schedule Wednesday, March 25 vs. Illinois State. Read the rest of this entry »
