CARY, N.C. - Trailing 11-4 in the ninth, UNC Wilmington exploded for 11 runs as the Seahawks eliminated rival and third-seed Elon with a 15-11 win on Sunday at the NCAA Cary Regional at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks ran their record to 44-16-1 and reached the regional championship game for the third time in four NCAA tournament appearances. UNCW will face top-seeded UNC Chapel Hill at 520 p.m. The Phoenix, meanwhile, concluded their season with a 44-18 mark. Read the rest of this entry »

Elon 6 Mount St. Mary’s 3

CARY, N.C. - Ken Ferrer allowed just three runs over a career-best 7.2 innings pitched and Mike Melillo hit a two-run home run to lead the 29th-ranked and third-seeded Elon Phoenix to a 6-3 victory over the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers in an elimination game of the Cary Regional of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Phoenix upped its record to 44-17 while the Mountaineers ended their season at 21-34.

CARY, N.C. – Freshman Alex Hill went 4-for-4 and reached base five times while junior Brad Holt held Elon to six hits as UNC Wilmington topped Elon, 5-2, in the first game of the NCAA Cary Regional on Friday at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks (43-15-1), who advanced to the winner’s bracket game on Saturday at 5 p.m., picked up their school-record 43rd win and halted a brief 2-game losing skid. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - No. 2 North Carolina pounded out a season-high 22 hits and had five pitchers combine on a four-hit shutout in a 17-0 win over Charlotte Tuesday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. CORAL GABLES, Fla. - For the second time in the last four games, a walk-off home run propelled No. 1 Miami to a win. Junior left fielder Dave DiNatale sent the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 11th over the fence in left field as top-ranked Miami walked off with a 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday night at Mark Light Field. Baseball website PGcrosschecker.com recently compiled its list of the top 20 players in the Valley Baseball League. The list was compiled by Allan Simpson with input from the league’s managers and scouts.

Similar to the recently released Baseball America list, PG Crosschecker identified Winchester’s Luke Greinke as the league’s top prospect. He was also the league MVP. He was followed by Covington outfielder Jason Kipnis, but then six of the next seven players listed were pitchers.

Simpson noted that league officials felt that the 2007 season saw a jump in overall talent around the league, in particular in the pitching department. The numbers appear to support that assertion. In 2007, league pitchers as a whole had a 3.70 earned run average while hitters had a .247 batting average as a league. In 2006, hitters posted a .258 average while pitchers compiled a 3.88 ERA, and the year before saw a .257 batting average and 3.97 ERA as a league.

While Waynesboro finished first in the regular season and won the Jim Lineweaver Cup as league champions, the Generals placed just three players in the top 20 and none higher than #11. In fact, many of the top prospects come from the lower half of the standings. Simpson noted that was a sign of the league’s improved depth.

Bryan Altman hit a grand slam to lead The Citadel to a 6-5 victory over Elon on Thursday evening. Bulldog Justin Smith (7-4) picked up the victory for The Citadel by pitching two innings while allowing only one run. Link Saunders picked up his seventh save by going two scoreless innings. Elon starter Jesse Lewter (4-4) got the loss as he gave up six runs in seven innings. The Citadel will face Wofford at 4:30 pm on Friday while Elon will play Appalachian State at 1 pm.
