CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A trio of Ohio State pitchers, led by starter and winner Alex Wimmers (now 5-0), one-hit the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes and the Buckeye bats did more than enough to secure a 7-1 victory Tuesday before 1,755 fans at Alex Rodriguez Park. Ohio State, ranked 16th in the Collegiate Baseball poll, improves to 18-3 with the win while Miami, No. 2 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, falls to 18-5. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore right-hander Bryant Gaines struck out a career-best nine batters in six-plus innings, and All-America Dustin Ackley had two home runs among his four hits to pace No. 1 North Carolina to a 12-3 win over Appalachian State Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and the voting members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association have each selected Elon as the preseason favorite to repeat as champion in 2009. A year ago, the Phoenix became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular season and tournament titles en route to a 44-18 season and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. You have a good balance of young players and veterans on this team (16 juniors or seniors and 18 freshmen, red-shirt freshmen or sophomores). How does that affect your coaching style?

Rivals.com College Baseball Editor Kendall Rogers put out a great article previewing the Top 10 Seniors for the 2009 season. He names your typical players like Michael Rockett of Texas-San Antonio and Preston Guilmet of Arizona. He also brings up Nate Lape of Marshall who flies under the radar as he plays for the West Virginia based school. The biggest name on his list is Ole Miss’ pitcher Scott Bittle who appeared in 27 games with a ERA of 1.78. He held opponents to a .145 batting average against. The rest of the list includes: Luke Anders of Texas A&M, Cory Harrilchak of Elon, Chris Fetter of Michigan, Chris Rusin of Kentucky, Ben Orloff of UC Irvine and Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe. ELON, N.C. – Among its 56 games for the 2009 campaign, the Elon Phoenix squad will play 30 Southern Conference games and host a total of 27 games from Latham Park. The Phoenix, under the leadership of 13th-year head coach Mike Kennedy, will play seven games against teams which were a part of NCAA post-season play in 2008. WPCM 920 AM will carry 15 regular season contests plus the Southern Conference Tournament live in 2009. Elon has also introduced season ticket prices and packages for the upcoming season.
