ATHENS, Ga. – Jed Bradley scattered five runs over six innings and Jason Haniger went 4-for-5 with a home run to help No. 10 Georgia Tech (22-8-1) knock off top-ranked Georgia (29-7), 11-6, Tuesday night at Foley Field.
Bradley (2-2) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts to help the Yellow Jackets to their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first against the nation’s top-ranked team since the 2003 season. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina right-hander Patrick Johnson carried a no-hitter into the seventh against hard-hitting East Carolina, and the No. 2 Tar Heels held off a late rally for a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Pirates Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the victory, Carolina (25-7) extended its current winning streak to nine over ECU (25-6).
Johnson (2-0) was masterful against the Pirates, who entered the night eighth nationally with a .361 team average. Over a career-best 6 1/3 innings, the Conover, N.C., native struck out a career-high 11, walked three and allowed just the one base hit in the seventh. He retired six of the final seven batters he faced via the strikeout and fanned two or more in four separate frames. Read the rest of this entry »

Share Weekend Winners: Middle Tennessee State was the big weekend winner, as they swept a three game home series with Missouri State. Also posting impressive weekends were UALR, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Troy, and Western Kentucky. UALR took two of three games at home against Northern Iowa, and just missed a sweep with a one run loss on Saturday. Florida Atlantic finished the weekend with a 2-1 series record against Fordham. Florida International posted a 20 run Saturday in route to a two games to one series victory over Jacksonville. Louisiana-Monroe hosted the ULM and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record. New Orleans won the first three games of their home series against Towson before losing the Sunday finale to open the season 3-1. Troy lost a Friday contest against Kentucky in the Caravelle Resort Invitational before winning their next three games to end the tournament at a very solid 3-1. Western Kentucky took a single game from Toledo on Friday night, but the Saturday and Sunday meetings were canceled due to inclement weather. Read the rest of this entry »

NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Golden Eagles Begin Fall Practice
The Oral Roberts University baseball team has begun fall practice in preparation for the 2009 season, where the Golden Eagles look to claim their 12th consecutive conference championship.
ORU’s fall practice runs through mid-October, with intrasquad scrimmages at J.L. Johnson Stadium held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The scrimmages are free and open to the public.

BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic University has named Jason Jackson as its baseball team’s pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
“With his experience in college baseball and within the Sun Belt Conference, we expect Jason to pay immediate dividends to our program,” said John McCormack, FAU head baseball coach. “Not only has he proven to be an excellent coach, but he is a good person who will represent the university with class and dignity.”

CORAL GABLES, FL – Florida Atlantic right-hander Michael Obradovich struck out a season-best seven batters, allowing just three runs in eight outstanding innings and All-America candidate William Block hit two home runs in the Owls’ 6-3 win over No. 1 Miami.

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 25, today. Florida Atlantic senior outfielder Mike McKenna was named National Hitter of the Week, while Missouri junior right-hander Aaron Crow was named National Pitcher of the Week. A sacrifice fly from Brandon Smith in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie as University of South Florida defeated Florida Atlantic University (7-5) 7-6 at Red McEwen Field in Tampa Tuesday night.
USF got to Florida Atlantic starter Brandon Kloess in the second inning scoring five runs on five hits. The first fout batters of the inning singled off of Kloess and a walk and hit batter. After manufacturing three runs, Freshman Ryan Lockwood stroked a single to center field with the bases loaded that plated two more runs making it a 5-0 advantage for the Bulls.
