FIU led throughout the game and held Miami hitless for five-straight innings after starter Eric Horstmann gave up a pair of singles in the first. The Golden Panthers built a 4-0 lead before Miami bounced back for three runs in the seventh. UM carried the momentum into the eighth, loading the bases with two outs against reliever James Lajiness. After going 2-6 in their last 8 games, the formerly Top 25 ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (4-9) looked to get back to their winning ways with a three game series against Sun Belt opponent Arkansas State (8-4).

But the Indians would have none of that as they pulled off an impressive three game sweep over Cajuns at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in Lafayette, Louisiana this weekend.

Due to inclement weather, the teams played a doubleheader on Saturday with ASU winning 3-0 and 9-5 respectively. Read the rest of this entry »

CSTV editor Doug Kroll recently checked in on new Florida International coach Turtle Thomas. He has been one of the most successful coaches in the country as he has been to the CWS 14 times in his great assistant coaching career. His most recent stop was at Arizona State where he helped coach the Sun Devils to the CWS last season. He has also spent time with Georgia Tech, LSU, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Miami (FL) over the last 30 years. The full article is available here.

CSTV Editor Doug Kroll checks in with his weekly article about some of the off-season coaching moves.  The biggest move was George Horton heading to Oregon to restart the Duck program. This set off a chain reaction as UC-Irvine head coach Dave Serrano went to Fullerton while former USC coach Mike Gillespie came out of retirement to take over the UC-Irvine job. He also talks about Kevin O’Sullivan who took over Florida after being an assistant with Clemson, Turtle Thomas went down to Florida International from Arizona State where he was a longtime assistant, and finally with Todd Raliegh taking over Tennessee after being the head coach at Western Carolina. The Boston College Eagles have continued their closer struggles by blowing a three run lead in the ninth inning on Tuesday night to let the Florida International University Panthers pull out a 11-10 victory. Boston College closer Dan Houston pitched a perfect eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth. With a three run lead in the ninth, Houston gave up a lead-off double to Corey Lozano and then hit Bryan Pullin to set up first and second with none out. Mik Aoki decided to make a pitching change and brought in Mike Belfiore from first base to pitch. Belfiore promptly gave up a James McOwen single up the middle to make it a 10-8 game with runners on second and first still. Next batter, Luis Bautista hit a single to left field which let both runners score and Bautista ended up on second base as the winning run in the tie game. Chris Dunn ended up coming into the game to pinch run for the catcher Bautista. He then advanced to third base on a wild pitch which could not be stopped by catcher Jett Ruiz. Tyler Townsend hit a single up the middle to drive in Dunn for the winning run. FIU now has a record of 10-6 on the season and will host Rutgers on Friday for a 3 game set. Boston College now has a 1-6 record overall and will play Villanova and Monmouth on Wednesday. BC has blown five games on the young season and they better get their bullpen together on Wednesday because the ACC season opens up on Friday with a visit to Duke.
