Conway, S.C. – The Bears split a doubleheader against Florida International to kick off the 2009 season on Friday afternoon. Share Weekend Winners: Middle Tennessee State was the big weekend winner, as they swept a three game home series with Missouri State. Also posting impressive weekends were UALR, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Troy, and Western Kentucky. UALR took two of three games at home against Northern Iowa, and just missed a sweep with a one run loss on Saturday. Florida Atlantic finished the weekend with a 2-1 series record against Fordham. Florida International posted a 20 run Saturday in route to a two games to one series victory over Jacksonville. Louisiana-Monroe hosted the ULM and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record. New Orleans won the first three games of their home series against Towson before losing the Sunday finale to open the season 3-1. Troy lost a Friday contest against Kentucky in the Caravelle Resort Invitational before winning their next three games to end the tournament at a very solid 3-1. Western Kentucky took a single game from Toledo on Friday night, but the Saturday and Sunday meetings were canceled due to inclement weather. Read the rest of this entry »

NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. Share All Things Valley League has put together a Top 15 of the best hitters in the league during the 2008 season. The list is led by Florida International’s Tyler Townsend who had an outstanding summer with Winchester. He finished the season with a .387 average with 12 homers and 36 RBI in only 42 games. He also stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. Brandon Sizemore of College of Charleston comes in the runners up spot. He had a .377 average with 10 homers and 34 RBI. The rest of the top 5 is filled out by Marcus Nidfiffer (Kentucky), Drew Johnson (San Francisco), and Mickey Wiswall (Boston College). Share Ryan Mollica got an RBI single in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening.
The FIU Golden Panthers baseball team took on the Ontario Blue Jays on Wednesday evening with FIU coming up with a 1-0 victory. FIU used a combination of four pitchers who combined on a great pitching performance where they only allowed a single hit. Scott Rembisz started the game where he went three innings facing the minimum while striking out two batters. Justin Leith followed him to the mound where he went two innings allowing only a walk for the only base runner while striking out three hitters. Read the rest of this entry »

FIU baseball head coach Turtle Thomas announced his 2008 incoming class on Wednesday, as well as a schedule of events for the fall.
“Our goal is to improve our program every year and that comes through the recruiting efforts of our staff,” said Thomas.

While the regular season ended in May, several Golden Panthers are still taking swings and toeing the rubber as they take part in summer ball.
Tyler Townsend has led the way this summer, putting up terrific numbers for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League. FIU’s leading home run hitter in 2008 has posted a .405 average while slugging 11 homers, hitting 12 doubles, driving in 34 and getting on base at a .512 clip. Townsend’s outstanding numbers earned him an All-Star nod.

Baxter fired a no-hitter in Staunton’s 2-0 victory over Waynesboro on Thursday, July 5. The University of South Alabama lefty faced just one batter over the minimum in his complete-game effort, allowing runners to reach on a walk and an error with one of them picked off. Baxter struck out seven while firing the league’s first no-hitter since Paul Burnside of Winchester threw a perfect game in his first Valley League appearance in June of 2006. CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.fiusports.com) – It had been four years since FIU had beaten Miami at Mark Light Field and an eternity since it beat the nation’s No. 1 team. That all changed Wednesday night with a 6-3 win for the Golden Panthers (14-29) against top-ranked Miami (33-5) in front of 2,483 on the Hurricanes’ home field.
FIU led throughout the game and held Miami hitless for five-straight innings after starter Eric Horstmann gave up a pair of singles in the first. The Golden Panthers built a 4-0 lead before Miami bounced back for three runs in the seventh. UM carried the momentum into the eighth, loading the bases with two outs against reliever James Lajiness. MIAMI, Fla. – Sophomore right-hander David Gutierrez no-hit Florida International for the first three innings and No. 2 Miami erupted for 11 runs during those innings as the Hurricanes cruised past the Golden Panthers, 13-2, at University Park Wednesday night. Share After going 2-6 in their last 8 games, the formerly Top 25 ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (4-9) looked to get back to their winning ways with a three game series against Sun Belt opponent Arkansas State (8-4).
But the Indians would have none of that as they pulled off an impressive three game sweep over Cajuns at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in Lafayette, Louisiana this weekend.

Share The Boston College Eagles knocked off the Florida International Panthers 7-3 behind a strong pitching performance from Nick Asselin as he went seven strong innings while allowing only three hits and three unearned runs to pick up his first victory of the season to put his overall record at 1-1. Mike Augustine of Boston College hit his first homer of the year in the second inning while Barry Butera hit his third of the year in the seventh inning to give Boston College a 3-2 lead which they would give right back to the Panthers in the bottom of the inning in which Eric Campbell committed his second error of the game which led to the tying run scoring.
