MACON, Ga. – In each of its first three years in the Atlantic Sun, Kennesaw State has improved its standing and on the heels of its runner-up finish in 2008, the A-Sun coaches have installed the Owls as the preseason favorite, the conference office announced on Thursday.
Led by the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Kyle Heckathorn, the Owls received six of the 11 first-place votes outdistancing themselves from a bunched pack of Lipscomb, the 2008 conference champion, FGCU, the 2008 regular-season champion and Stetson. Share The Naples News has an article about the 2009 Florida Gulf Coast University releasing their 2009 schedule. The highlights of the schedule is the home opener on February 20th at 12:01am against Central Michigan. They will play CMU later that day at 8pm to get an early jump on the season. A couple of other highlights are visits from ACC member Boston College, Big Ten member Penn State, and a visit by instate rival Florida that will be played at Hammond Stadium which is the spring training home for the Minnesota Twins. Miami 4 Florida Gulf Coast 2 (11 innings)
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second time in the last four games, a walk-off home run propelled No. 1 Miami to a win. Junior left fielder Dave DiNatale sent the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 11th over the fence in left field as top-ranked Miami walked off with a 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday night at Mark Light Field. Florida Gulf Coast 5 South Florida 4
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team fell, 5-4, Tuesday night to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Red McEwen Field.
The Bulls’ record drops to 3-4, while the Eagles improve to 8-1.
USF’s offensive attack came in the first two innings after falling behind by two after the top of the first. Redshirt freshman Ryan Lockwood spearheaded the Bulls’ offensive charge with a lead-off walk. Junior counterparts Brandon Smith and Addison Maruszak followed with a walk and a hit by pitch to fill the bases. MACON, Ga. – Stetson is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Atlantic Sun Conference baseball champion in 2008 in the league’s preseason poll. The Hatters garnered eight of 12 first place votes in the poll conducted among the conference’s head coaches. Hatter outfielder Justin Bass and Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph split preseason Player of the Year honors, while Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers claimed Pitcher of the Year honors. Share The North Florida Ospreys have put out a tentative 2008 schedule. They will host SEC power Mississippi State on opening night February 22nd which starts a three game set. They will open up Atlantic Sun play the next weekend when they head down to Florida Gulf Coast College for a three game set. The rest of the schedule is available here.
