Florida Wide Receiver Riley Cooper has decided to focus on his football career instead of playing baseball. Cooper was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round of the 2009 MLB Draft and was set to take his physical on Jan. 17th as he put it on hold throughout the football season. Last season, Riley started 23 games in right field and two in center field while batting .247 with 16 runs, eight walks, eight RBI and five doubles in 30 games. Riley also played this summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Cotuit Kettleers where he played in three games recording only a walk in five at-bats.

Strength and Conditioning coach Stephen King of Villanova University recently wrote a fantastic article for the magazine Training & Conditioning. He details the workouts that Szczur does during the football and baseball seasons as he is a member of both squads. Szczur was outstanding this season on the football field leading the Villanova Wildcats to the FCS Championship by having over 2200 all purpose yards in 15 games. He led the baseball program last season with a .346 average in 48 games.

Stanford’s Toby Gerhart is skipping his final year of football eligibility in the fall by withdrawing from school to focus his efforts on preparing for the 2010 NFL Draft. Gerhart was also a member of the Cardinal baseball team for the last three season as he appeared in 55 games during the 2009 season hitting .288 with seven homers and 36 RBI.

Paul Strelow of The State has a good article about Clemson junior outfielder Kyle Parker’s big decision coming up in the near future. Parker is also the starting quarterback on the Clemson football team where he is set to finish up his first season behind center. He is likely going to be a high selection in the 2010 MLB Draft if he tells a potential team that he will commit fully to baseball.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team has added a pair of right-handed pitchers to its roster for the 2010 season, head coach Tracy Smith announced today. Matt Ernest (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Casey Smith (Bloomington, Ind./North) will join the squad at the beginning of the spring semester.
"We obviously are a bit thin at pitcher heading into this season," Smith said. "These two will give us some depth in our pitching staff and have a good chance to be in the mix for weekend innings this spring."

The Herald out of Rock Hill South Carolina has put out an interesting preview of the Clemson and South Carolina football game on Saturday. The starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers is Kyle Parker who is a redshirt freshman quarterback for football team while he will be a junior in this upcoming spring for the baseball squad. He entered Clemson in the spring of 2008 to take part in Spring Practice for the football squad and ended up participating in a majority of the baseball games in addition to his football duties.

Toby Gerhart has a tough decision coming his way. A star baseball player for Stanford, Gerhart is also making a lot of noise as a running back for the Cardinal football team this season. Gerhart ranks near the top in touchdowns and rushing yards so far this season, with whispers about a chance at the Heisman, but he has also finished the 2009 spring as one of Stanford’s top baseball players.

Stanford fullback/outfielder Toby Gerhart has been outstanding on the football field as he has 29 career touchdowns which is second all-time. He is also third on the rushing yardage list with 2,645 yards which is only 295 behind Brad Muster for the record. Gerhart has also been solid on the baseball diamond as he has hit .274 with 16 homers and 68 RBI over his first three seasons. He has stated that his dream is to play in the NFL but might have also have a chance to play in the Majors.

Former South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley is currently in fall workouts with the Alabama baseball program as he is trying to make the transition between the two sports. Smelley started 15 games for the Steve Spurrier led Gamecocks before deciding to transfer down to Tuscaloosa to play baseball with the Crimson Tide.

There is a huge football game today between the Florida Gators and the LSU Tigers. LSU’s Chad Jones is expected to make a huge impact on the game as he is the starting free safety and also spends time as a relief pitcher on the LSU staff. He has been already rated as one of the top safeties for the upcoming NFL draft and has started to got some nibbles from MLB teams as they were thoroughly impressed with his performance in the College World Series.
