TobyGerhardt Toby Gerhart has a tough decision coming his way. A star baseball player for Stanford, Gerhart is also making a lot of noise as a running back for the Cardinal football team this season. Gerhart ranks near the top in touchdowns and rushing yards so far this season, with whispers about a chance at the Heisman, but he has also finished the 2009 spring as one of Stanford’s top baseball players.

GoldenSpikesThe Wall Street Journal has an interesting article about the success rate of players who win the Golden Spikes Award being more successful than players that win the Heisman Trophy Award. I think the reason behind this is that the best players in College Football do not fit the “system” at the next level being the NFL. In baseball, it is much different in that the best player in college is likely going to be able to hit/pitch in the MLB because the talent transfers over easier to the pro game. Jared Mitchell (Courtesy of LSUSports.net)

Jared Mitchell and Chad Jones are both members of the LSU football and baseball teams but receive different treatment from baseball coach Paul Mainieri and football coach Les Miles. Jared Mitchell will be a member of the LSU baseball squad for the entire season and join the football club during summer workouts. Mitchell showed me in a Cape Cod Baseball League that he is an excellent player with great speed. He should be drafted in the upcoming 2009 MLB Draft. Chad Jones has the opposite problem as he will be able to be a member of the LSU baseball program until spring practice for football begins on March 12th. This will leave the Tigers squad short a player since Jones recieved scholarship money from the baseball program and counts against the 35 players limit. Read the rest of this entry »

Picture of Kyle LongThe Florida State Seminoles have picked up 11 commitments for the 2009 baseball season. The biggest recruit in name and physically is left-handed pitcher Kyle Long. He is listed as a 6-7 280 pound left handed pitcher/hitter who is the son of NFL Hall of Fame member Howie Long and brother of UVA linemen Chris Long. Kyle suffered a neck injury this football season which he was taken off on a stretcher and is one of the top offensive linemen in the country. He is expected to spurn Bobby Bowden and focus on playing baseball as he is projected as a high draft pick in 2008.
