A couple of former MLB players were recently named new assistant coaches. Rusty Greer who made a name for himself with the Texas Rangers was recently added to the coaching staff of NAIA school Texas Wesleyan. He served as the manager of the Colleyville Lone Stars of the Texas Collegiate League in 2007 and this summer is coaching the Dallas Baseball Academy which is a 17 year old team. Britt Reames who pitched in the Major Leagues most recently in 2006 has been named the new pitching coach of Furman University. He is a 1996 graduate of The Citadel and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on November 1st. The full article is available here.

The USC Trojans baseball squad has put the finishing touches on Fall Workouts with a three game intrasquad scrimmage. The Gold squad defeated the Cardinal squad two games to one. Game 1 was won by the Cardinal team by a score of 5-2 with the Gold team winning the final two games by scores of 17-6 and 6-2. The star for the Gold team was Nick Buss who went 6-12 with four stolen bases. Buss was named the MVP of the historic Alaska Baseball League this summer. The Cardinal team struggled at the plate with NC State transfer Mike Roskopf leading them by going 3-12. The full recap of the scrimmages is available here.

Tom House has been announced as the new Assistant Coach at the University of Southern California under Chad Kreuter. House brings an outstanding resume to the Trojans bench as he played MLB from 1971-1978. After finishing his MLB career, House became an expert in pitching including being a pitching coach for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers. This hiring should help out the Trojans pitching staff and help them make a return to the College World Series.

Team USA picked up a 5-1 victory over the Dominican Republic to open up pool play. Tyson Ross (Cal) started on the mound and kept the Dominican offense off balance with solid off-speed stuff and a good fastball. He lasted 6.2 innings while giving up four hits and one run while striking out seven batters. Logan Forsythe (Arkansas) went 3-4 with an RBI while Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt) went 2-5 with an RBI to lead Team USA offense. The Dominican team consisted of former major league players in Jose Offerman, Raul Mondesi, Delvi Cruz, Enrique Wilson, and Luis Polonia.
Team USA will be back in action on Monday when they play Nicaragua and will play Brazil on Tuesday in the final game of group play.

The USC Trojans athletic department has posted a season preview on the USC Trojan baseball program. The Trojans enter a new era by naming former MLB player Chad Kreuter who is the son-in-law of former head coach Mike Gillespie. He spent the 2005 season as the Director of Baseball Operations for the USC Trojans before becoming the Manager in 2006 of the Modesto Nuts which is an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
