FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE Lubbock, Texas – The Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award Selection Committee has named Florida State All-American catcher Buster Posey of Leesburg, Ga., as the fifth recipient of the award, which was presented in a national telecast (FCS) on Wednesday evening at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
Posey conquered an elite field of 15 other semi-finalists and finalists including consensus All-American shortstop Gordon Beckham of Georgia and pitcher Brian Matusz of San Diego. Buster Posey who has been honored by many organizations as the best player in the nation received another award on Friday when he picked up the Johnny Bench Award which honors the best college catcher. Posey led the Seminoles to the College World Series while winning the Triple Crown (Batting Average, Homers, and RBI) in the ACC. The full article from the Tallahassee Democrat is available here.
Here is your recap of Day 3 in the College World Series. We saw in the losers bracket where the Miami (FL) Hurricanes beating FSU 7-5 eliminating the Noles from the tournament. In the winner’s bracket matchup, Georgia knocked off Stanford 4-3 behind a two run seventh inning to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Stanford and Miami will face off on Wednesday at 7 pm EDT.
The Florida State Seminoles lost today to the University of Miami (FL) 7-5 to end the FSU season without a National Title. Earlier this season, FSU and Miami (FL) had a bench clearing incident at the end of the ACC series. The incident started when the Seminoles showed poor sportsmanship by not coming out at the end of the game which caused a reaction from the UM players to get the FSU players out. FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE Jemile Weeks hit his second home run of the College World Series, closer Carlos Gutierrez worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning and Miami held off Florida State 7-5 in a Bracket 1 elimination game on Monday.

The Stanford Cardinal broke open a 5-5 tie with 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the opening game against Florida State in the College World Series.
The Cardinal struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and then added two more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 3-0. Florida State answered with two runs to close the gap to 3-2 before Stanford scored two runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead back to three runs at 5-2. Florida State answered with a three run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5.
Stanford then exploded for 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to send the Seminoles to the losers’ bracket.
FROM NCBWA RELEASE OMAHA, Neb.—Buster Posey, Florida State’s slugging catcher and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year as well as 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic Baseball Player of the Year, is the 22nd annual recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Whitney Bank.
The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) selected Posey in a vote of over 300 members of the NCBWA and Dick Howser Trophy committee from an initial field of more than 700 nominees in 2008. Read the rest of this entry »
The Florida State Seminoles will be heading to Omaha for the 19th time in school history and the 13th time under head coach Mark Martin Sr. without winning a title. They have a current record of 54-12 after losing to Bucknell (7-0) in the opener of the Tallahassee Regional before reeling off victories over Florida (17-11), Bucknell (24-9), Tulane (17-8 and 16-7). The Seminoles then hosted Wichita State in the Super Regionals where they lost the first game 10-7 before winning the final two games by scores of 14-4 and 11-4 to qualify for the College World Series. CARY, N.C. - North Carolina took a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and never looked back as they dispatched Coastal Carolina by a final score of 14-4. UNC led Coastal Carolina 12-0 before Coastal Carolina was able to finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs. UNC will take on the winner of the UC-Irvine/LSU Super Regional.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Seminoles advanced to Omaha behind an 11-4 victory over Wichita State. After dropping the first game of the series 10-7, Florida State bounced back to take games two and three and advance to their 19th College World Series but first CWS appearance since 2000. Florida State will take on Stanford in the opening game.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior pitcher Matt Fairel matched a career-high eight innings while striking out six allowing four runs and walking zero to lead Florida State to a 14-4 victory over Wichita State to force a third and deciding game in the Tallahassee Super Regional on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. Fairel threw a career high 124 pitches in holding the Shockers to one run in his final seven innings pitched and retiring 21 of the last 26 batters he faced in improving his record to 12-2
The victory by the Seminoles tied the best of three game series at one game each. The final and deciding game will be played Sunday in Tallahassee at 1:00 p.m. Wichita State will be the home team with the winner of the game advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Rob Musgrave pitched 5.2 innings and Conor Gillaspie hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lead Wichita State to a 10-7 victory over Florida State in the first game of the Tallahassee Super Regional on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The win moves the Shockers to within one victory of advancing to the College World Series for the first time since 1996 and for the eighth time in school history.
The Shockers and the Seminoles will play the second game of the series Saturday at Noon. The best two-out-of-three series will finish on Sunday should the Seminoles force a third game.
Musgrave improved his record to 12-1 as he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out five. He threw 120 pitches as the temperature on the field surpassed the 100 degree mark. Anthony Capra got the final out of the game to record his first save of the season.
The Seminoles made the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they drew to within 10-7 with the trying run at the plate. Pinch hitter Jack Posey struck out to end the game.
The Wichita State Shockers head down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles in a Super Regional showdown between two of the historic programs in College Baseball. The Shockers enter with a 47-15 overall record while going 19-5 in the Missouri Valley conference. The Seminoles on the other hand have a 52-11 record and 24-6 in the ACC.
