The Stanford Cardinal broke open a 5-5 tie with 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the opening game against Florida State in the College World Series.
The Cardinal struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and then added two more runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 3-0. Florida State answered with two runs to close the gap to 3-2 before Stanford scored two runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead back to three runs at 5-2. Florida State answered with a three run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5.
Stanford then exploded for 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to send the Seminoles to the losers’ bracket.

The Florida State Seminoles will be heading to Omaha for the 19th time in school history and the 13th time under head coach Mark Martin Sr. without winning a title. They have a current record of 54-12 after losing to Bucknell (7-0) in the opener of the Tallahassee Regional before reeling off victories over Florida (17-11), Bucknell (24-9), Tulane (17-8 and 16-7). The Seminoles then hosted Wichita State in the Super Regionals where they lost the first game 10-7 before winning the final two games by scores of 14-4 and 11-4 to qualify for the College World Series. CARY, N.C. - North Carolina took a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and never looked back as they dispatched Coastal Carolina by a final score of 14-4. UNC led Coastal Carolina 12-0 before Coastal Carolina was able to finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs. UNC will take on the winner of the UC-Irvine/LSU Super Regional.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Seminoles advanced to Omaha behind an 11-4 victory over Wichita State. After dropping the first game of the series 10-7, Florida State bounced back to take games two and three and advance to their 19th College World Series but first CWS appearance since 2000. Florida State will take on Stanford in the opening game.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior pitcher Matt Fairel matched a career-high eight innings while striking out six allowing four runs and walking zero to lead Florida State to a 14-4 victory over Wichita State to force a third and deciding game in the Tallahassee Super Regional on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. Fairel threw a career high 124 pitches in holding the Shockers to one run in his final seven innings pitched and retiring 21 of the last 26 batters he faced in improving his record to 12-2
The victory by the Seminoles tied the best of three game series at one game each. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Rob Musgrave pitched 5.2 innings and Conor Gillaspie hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lead Wichita State to a 10-7 victory over Florida State in the first game of the Tallahassee Super Regional on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The win moves the Shockers to within one victory of advancing to the College World Series for the first time since 1996 and for the eighth time in school history.
The Shockers and the Seminoles will play the second game of the series Saturday at Noon. The best two-out-of-three series will finish on Sunday should the Seminoles force a third game.
Musgrave improved his record to 12-1 as he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out five. He threw 120 pitches as the temperature on the field surpassed the 100 degree mark. Anthony Capra got the final out of the game to record his first save of the season.
The Seminoles made the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they drew to within 10-7 with the trying run at the plate. Pinch hitter Jack Posey struck out to end the game.
The Wichita State Shockers head down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles in a Super Regional showdown between two of the historic programs in College Baseball. The Shockers enter with a 47-15 overall record while going 19-5 in the Missouri Valley conference. The Seminoles on the other hand have a 52-11 record and 24-6 in the ACC. Tim Beckham from Griffin Ga will be the number 1 pick in the MLB 2008 Draft today at 2 pm by the Tampa Bay Rays. This goes against many experts including ESPN’s Keith Law that expected Florida State catcher Buster Posey to be selected in the top spot. I think this selection is better since Beckham has a bigger upside then Posey and could be a real special player. This development will hurt the Southern Cal program as Beckham was expected to be a threat in the Trojans program over the next few years. The full MLB.com article is available here.
Tallahassee, Fla. - No. 4 national seed Florida State (52-11) bounced back from an opening day shutout to win four straight games and advance to the eighth NCAA Super Regional in school history with a 16-7 win over Tulane Monday night at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. Tallahassee, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (50-11) stayed alive in the NCAA Tournament with a 24-9 victory over Bucknell (30-24-2) Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles advanced to the regional finals against Tulane and must now defeat the Green Wave twice with game one being held later this evening at 7 pm. The Seminoles became the first team in the nation to reach the 50-win plateau.

Tallahassee, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida State (49-11) thwarted elimination on Saturday afternoon downing intra-state rival Florida (34-24) 17-11 in game three of the Tallahassee Regional. The Seminoles registered a season-high 25 hits as every batter in the starting line-up recorded a hit, while eight of the nine batters collected multiple hits. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In the biggest win in Bucknell baseball history, senior Mathew Wilson pitched a complete-game, six-hit shutout against hard-hitting Florida State, and the Bison pulled off a 7-0 upset on opening night of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium.
Dane Grandizio went 4-for-5 to lead the offense, and the Bison scored three times in the second inning, another in the third and three more in the fourth. Wilson took it from there, eclipsing the school record with his fifth career shutout. Read the rest of this entry »
