Top Recruiting Classes for 2009Posted by: Brian Foley in 2008 Top Players, 2009 Recruits, SEC![]() Pat Murphy brings in another strong class The College Baseball Newspaper released their rankings for the Top Recruiting classes for the 2009 season. It is led by Arizona State University for the third time in the 26th year existence of the rankings. They will welcome a 20 recruit class to Tempe in the spring with 15 incoming freshmen and 5 junior college transfers. Out of the 20 recruits, 13 of them were selected in the 2008 MLB Draft. Oregon comes in second place in the rankings with their 30 recruits joining George Horton in Eugene for the return of UO baseball. Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Georgia round out the Top 5. Gordon Beckham still had more than 48 hours to make a decision, but he knew exactly what he wanted. The All-American shortstop and the White Sox agreed to terms on a Minor League contract Wednesday, inking Beckham to a $2.6 million signing bonus. Beckham was the club’s first-round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, having been selected eighth overall. The deadline for teams to sign players is Friday at midnight. Last week, TCBB scribe Don Boyles tipped off that Connor Harrell, a physical specimen and top outfielder had committed to the Commodores. PG rates Harrell the #65 prospect in the class and awarded him a Perfect 10 rating as well. The Kinkaid School product is a strapping 6′3″ 190lb speed demon, clocking a 6.66 time in the 60 yard run at PG’s National Showcase. The East Division in front of 8,629 fans used a seven run bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 6-1 deficit and pick up a 8-6 victory in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game. The game was dominated by the team’s respective pitching staffs with each squad having a pitcher blow up in an inning. The Western squad scored the first run of the game in the 3rd inning with an A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) opposite field homer while Rob Poythress (Georgia) returned the favor in the fifth inning by hitting a ball back in the same general area in right field. Both homers were just pop flys to right field but the strong wind heading out to right field brought the ball out of the ball park. Fresno State scored two runs in the top of the second inning off of a two run blast by Steve Detwiler. Detwiler drove in the third run of the game in the top of the fourth with a double that scored Steve Susdorf and the Detwiler continued his one man onslaught with a three run blast in the top of the sixth and then capped off his night with a single in the top of the eighth. The Bulldogs who batted around in both the third and fourth innings suddenly found themselves up by nine runs. Georgia tried to mount a comeback as they scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull to within five at 15-10 but Fresno State answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and one more in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the lead back out to nine runs. With their starting pitching used up the Fresno State Bulldogs turned to Sean Bonesteele for the start. Bonesteele pitched three innings and gave up just one run before turning the ball over to the rest of the Fresno State bullpen. Jake Floethe, Kris Tomlinson and Jason Breckley combined to pitch the next six innings giving up just two more runs as Fresno State turned to their closer Bradon Burke with a three run lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Miami got on the board first in the bottomof the first inning on a solo home run by Jemile Weeks. Georgia tied the game in the top of the third inning on a single by Ryan Peisel but Miami came right back and retook the lead on a two run homer by Ryan Tekotte. The Signing deadline was last night at midnight. There was some news out of the SEC last night with Pedro Alvarez signing at 11:59pm and five recruits have decided to go to Athens. 
Recruiting coordinator Eric Bakich of Vanderbilt has kicked off recruiting season with a bang. Today, it was reported that stellar defensive shortstop Anthony Gomez of top ranked Don Bosco high school of New Jersey 


The Georgia Bulldogs tagged Fresno State closer Brandon Burke for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to stun the west coast Bulldogs in game one of the best of three series. Fresno State had just plated three runs in the top of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
OMAHA, Neb. - The sixth-ranked Georgia baseball team advanced in the winner’s bracket of the 2008 College World Series with a 4-3 win over seventh-ranked Stanford at Rosenblatt Stadium Monday in front of a crowd of 20,087.
