Brett NicholasBrett Nicholas of the Kelowna Falcons, a 19-year-old left-handed hitting catcher/first baseman from Gonzaga, hit .500 for the week to earn West Coast Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week honors.

Nicholas hit safely in all six of the Falcons’ games, including a 4-hit performance Saturday night at Kitsap. The Phoenix, Arizona-native knocked in 5 runs, including a 3-RBI game July 2 against Spokane. The Falcons went 2-4 for the week, with both wins coming at home over the RiverHawks. World University GamesOTTAWA - Terry McKaig, Team Leader and Head Coach of Team Canada’s (CIS) World University Baseball Games team is pleased to announce the 22 student-athletes that will be participating in the 4th World University Baseball Games Tournament. The Canadian team is made up of student-athletes who participated in the CIS (OUA), NAIA and NCAA.

“I feel very confident that we will make a run for the medal podium with the group of talented student-athletes that we were able to assemble in such a short time,” said McKaig. While the breakdown of student-athletes is mostly based in the USA, six members of the University of British Columbia’s squad, who play in the NAIA, and two student-athletes from the OUA (Ontario) one from the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo will represent Canadian based schools. Spokane, Wash. (http://www.gozags.com May 3, 2008) Jason Chatwood hit a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth for Gonzaga University Saturday as the Bulldogs defeated the University of San Francisco 6-5 at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane, Wash. The three-game West Coast Conference series between the Zags and Dons is now tied 1-1.

After surrendering a game tying run in the top of the ninth, Gonzaga (28-19, 8-8) entered its half of the ninth inning with the scored knotted at five. The leadoff batter in the inning flied out for the first out of the inning, before Chatwood stepped in. The junior then hit a one-run home run just over the leftfield wall to give the Bulldogs the 6-5 victory. The walk-off was the first of the season for GU and the first since Mark Castellitto’s walk-off against Loyola Marymount University last season. Read the rest of this entry »

SPOKANE, Wash. (http://www.gozags.com April 14, 2008) Seven Gonzaga University batters recorded multiple hits as the Bulldogs exploded for 18 hits to down visiting University of Washington 15-3 Monday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane. Jason Chatwood and Mark Castellitto led the brigade, recording three hits a piece.

Gonzaga (19-16, 2-6 WCC) starter Reedy Berg (2-2) earned the victory as the freshman allowed three runs on six his while striking out eight over 6.0 innings pitched. Reliever Andrew Danner earned his first career save as the rookie pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to end the game. UW (23-11) starter Geoff Brown (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowin seven runs on eight hits in over 2.1 innings of work. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team completed a three-game West Coast Conference sweep over visiting Gonzaga University Sunday afternoon with a 9-3 win at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-11 overall, 4-2 in the WCC and have won three consecutive games. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 16-14 overall and 1-4 in the WCC.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind another solid pitching performance from junior All-American Brian Matusz, 11 Torero hits and five Gonzaga University errors, the 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (20-11, 2-2 WCC) cruised their way to a 10-2 West Coast Conference win over the Bulldogs (16-12, 1-2 WCC) Friday afternoon at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

The Toreros wasted no time in scoring as they put up three runs on three hits in the third inning. Nick McCoy led off the inning with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a Kevin Muno sacrifice bunt. Josh Romanski moved McCoy to third on a groundout to the first baseman and Victor Sanchez drove in McCoy with a RBI single to centerfield. The Toreros then kept things going as they took advantage of a Gonzaga fielding error by the right fielder to allow James Meador to move all the way to second and scored Sanchez from first. Sean Nicol then drove in the final run with a RBI single to left field to move the score to 3-0 in favor of USD.

HILO, HI – The 19th-raked University of San Diego baseball team (13-7) completed a four-game sweep over the University of Hawaii – Hilo (7-11) with a 9-4 win in five innings Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.

There was a 40 minute rain delay, followed by a 30 minute lightning delay, then followed by another 20 minute rain delay that caused the game to start late, and because of travel plans for the Torero baseball team to get to Honolulu, the game had to be called after five innings, but does go down as a completed game. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - University of Alabama senior first baseman Matt Bentley slammed two home runs, including a solo blast in the fifth inning that gave the Crimson Tide the lead for good, in a 9-5 win over the Samford Bulldogs Wednesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Bentley went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in leading the Crimson Tide to its sixth straight win. Bentley gave the Tide the lead for good with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning off losing pitcher Michael Jarry. Spokane, Wash.- Junior first baseman Ryan Wiegand homered for the third straight game and Gonzaga University won its fourth straight and its seventh in the last eight outings with a 7-4 win over Indiana University Monday in the opener of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick baseball tournament at Beiden Field.

With the scored tied 4-4 in the eighth, Wiegand hit a two-out 0-1 pitch to left-center to put the Bulldogs (7-5) up 6-4. Evan Wells had opened the inning with a walk off Anthony Agnew, on in relief of Hoosiers (3-6) starter Tyler Tufts. Chris Squires relieved Agnew and the Bulldogs got a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to third to set the stage for Wiegand, who tied Jason Chatwood for the team home run lead. STILLWATER, Okla., (http://www.gozags.com Feb. 24, 2008) The Gonzaga University baseball team was unable to avoid a sweep by No. 27 Oklahoma State University Sunday, dropping both games of a doubleheader. In the first game of the twin bill, the Zags’ fell to the Cowboys 3-1 before dropping a 10-3 decision in game two.
