MarkJohnsonSHSU Head Coach Mark Johnson has released the 2010 slate for his Sam Houston State Bearkats.  After winning the Southland Conference Tournament in 2009, the Bearkats look to continue their winning ways this season.  The team will open the campaign on the road against in-state foe TCU (Feb. 19-21).  After returning from Fort Worth, Sam Houston State will host Prairie View A&M (Feb. 23), Utah (Feb. 26-28), and Texas Southern (March 2) as well as the Hillcrest Invitational Tournament (March 5-7) in which Creighton and Northern Colorado will take part.

With high expectations for the Broncs, The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program announced the 2010 schedule August 12 with 26 home games, which will be played at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium, versus 20 away occasions.

gwc_baseballColorado Sports Examiner writer Mark Knudson recently put together an article about College Baseball in the state of Colorado. Knudson played 12 years of professional baseball including being the first Colorado resident to play for the Rockies. He talks about how the Northern Colardo program used to be a powerhouse in the past with 10 College World Series appearances. They ended up dropping the program down to the Division 2 level but recently brought the program back up to the Division 1 level in 2004. They have played as an independent since then but it was recently announced that Northern Colorado will join the Great Western Conference starting in the 2010 season. He also talks about Colorado and Colorado State dropping their programs in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Read the rest of this entry »

The Great West has added New York Institute of Technology and the University of Northern Colorado as associate members in the sport of baseball for the 2009-10 academic year, commissioner Ed Grom announced today. The additions bring the total number of baseball schools in the Great West to eight members, joining Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley. When the Interim AD Ricky Vaughn  at UT- Pan American elected to not renew Coach Gawlik’s contract it will be interesting to see which direction UT-Pan Am goes. The baseball team at UT-Pan Am plays in a very nice stadium that they share with a minor league team in Edinburg, Texas. Also with the announcement that they will be joining the Great West Conference starting this school year.
