West Hartford, CT – University of Hartford Director of Athletics Patricia H. Meiser and Head Baseball Coach Jeff Calcaterra announced the hiring of Jerry Shank as an assistant coach on Monday. Shank will serve as the Hawks’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
"I am very excited to announce the addition of Jerry Shank to our staff,” said Calcaterra. “Throughout the search process, Jerry exuded a passion for college baseball and will be a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. I also expect him to quickly develop a mutual respect and unique rapport with our players. I’m looking forward to working with Jerry and the impact he will have on our program"

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– Single-handedly responsible for two Hartford wins last week, Hawks sophomore infielder Bobby Gorski (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) was named America East Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending March 29. A pair of Stony Brook freshmen right-handed pitchers, Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) and Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), received the conference’s Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after picking up two combined victories in the Seawolves’ 4-0 week. CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A trio of Ohio State pitchers, led by starter and winner Alex Wimmers (now 5-0), one-hit the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes and the Buckeye bats did more than enough to secure a 7-1 victory Tuesday before 1,755 fans at Alex Rodriguez Park. Ohio State, ranked 16th in the Collegiate Baseball poll, improves to 18-3 with the win while Miami, No. 2 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, falls to 18-5. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Last year’s regular season champion, Binghamton University, barely edged out the defending tournament champion, Stony Brook University, to claim the top spot in the 2009 America East Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bearcats received four of a possible six votes and garnered 34 points, while the Seawolves claimed the remaining three votes and finished with 33 points. We recently saw the Big East and Big Ten set up an interconference matchups of games in Florida but we recently found out the America East and the Northeast conference will be playing a similar tournament from March 27th-29th. The three teams from the America East conference will visit the Northeast conference members over the three days where they will play single games on Friday and Sunday with a doubleheader on Saturday. West Hartford, CT – University of Hartford baseball coach Jeff Calcaterra announced the addition of five student-athletes who will join the baseball program in the fall of 2009. All five incoming players signed National Letters of Intent on the first day of the signing period November 12th.
This year’s recruiting effort has once again broadened the scope of the baseball teams’ demographics by adding a player from Connecticut and the four surrounding states. Wearing the red and white for the 2010 season will be Andrew Barry (Boxford, MA), Tyler Corsi (Cranston, RI), Vincent Fiore (Brooklyn, NY), Anthony Mannuccia (Danbury, CT), and Brian Rice (Cherry Hill, NJ). The Hawks’ 56-game regular season slate includes 29 home dates at the Hartford Baseball Field in West Hartford and two spring trips, which includes games in New Mexico and Florida. KINGSTON, RI (3/22/08) – Temple scored seven runs in the fourth inning and won for the fourth straight game with a 9-6 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday at Bill Beck Field. Junior Kyle Obal (Derwood, MD / Sherwood) had four hits and two RBI, while freshman Byron McKoy (Charlotte, NC / Independence) was a triple away from the cycle and had three hits. Junior Matt Mongiardini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) improved to 4-0 with six innings on the mound and senior Arshwin Asjes (Willemstad, Curacao / Cheverus-ME) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. This week we check in on the America East conference which had Binghamton win the Regular Season title and Albany won the conference tournament in a classic 1-0 pitching duel. Albany was put into the Arkansas regional where they lost to Arkansas 9-0 and Creighton 21-11. The conference tournament will be double elimination at the number 1 seed’s home field.
