The Arkansas Razorbacks picked up another victory over Arizona State on Wednesday night to sweep the brief two game set from the Arizona State Sun Devils in front of a record crowd at Baum Stadium. I guess people will have to respect the Razorbacks 24-6 record. They will now host Vanderbilt in an SEC series this weekend. Arizona State will head home to take on a tough Washington State squad. The first round of the Baseball Beanpot took place today with Northeastern taking on Harvard and Umass playing Boston College. Northeastern in the first game hammered Harvard behind a 18 hit husky attack which saw them walk away with a 16-5 victory. UMass scored three runs over the final two innings to break a 2-2 tie and advance to the Beanpot Championship game with the 5-2 victory. The championship game on Monday will see Boston College face off against Harvard in the Consolation game while Northeastern will play UMass in the Championship game at Fenway Park. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Senior Robert Papenhause (Hillsborough, Calif.) enjoyed a terrific week while leading the Bears to a 5-1-1 record. After hitting a solid 5-for-10 in three non-league games early in the week, Papenhause really got going in league play over the weekend, recording seven hits in 11 at bats for a stellar .636 average. In the four games against Penn and Columbia, Papenhause also scored five runs, drove in 11, and had four home runs. His offense helped spark the Bears, who averaged 12 runs per game while running their league record to 7-1, currently second in the Ivy League. Read the rest of this entry »

Here is your Ivy League Recap for April 5th.

Game 1: Brown 9 Columbia 7 (7 innings)
Game 2: Brown 12 Columbia 11

Providence, R.I. – Brown took a pair of tight games against Ivy rival Columbia on Sunday afternoon, as Bruno’s bats continued to swing well. Sophomore Matt Colantonio (Garden City, N.Y.) blasted a two-run walk-off home run to center field in the second game, bringing the fans to their feet and the team streaming out onto the field as the Bears ran their league win streak to six consecutive games. PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Senior Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) led Dartmouth to victories in five of six games last week, including the first four Ivy games of the season, by hitting .560 for the week with three doubles, three homers and eight RBIs for a slugging percentage of 1.040. He began the week with a clutch two-run double in the ninth to tie San Jose State as the Big Green went on to a 7-4 win, their first of the year. This weekend, the outfielder crushed Ivy pitching to the tune of a .688 average (11-for-16) with home runs in each of the last three games as Dartmouth swept doubleheaders on the road at Penn and Columbia. Game 2: Brown 7 Princeton 2

Princeton, N.J. – Brown continued to play well on the first weekend of Ivy play, sweeping a doubleheader with Princeton by a combined score of 14-5. Junior infielder Robert Papenhause (Hillsborough, CA) had a terrific day at the plate for the Bears, going four-for-six with a pair of walks, a home run, and four RBI’s. Ithaca, N.Y. – Brown split with Cornell on Saturday afternoon, going 1-1 to open Ivy League play. Sophomore designated hitter Pete Greskoff (Paoli, PA) had the big hit for the Bears in the opener, coming through with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth. Penn’s Jeremy Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) perfected his swing in Florida and went on an absolutely torrid pace to lead the Quakers during the Spring trip, hitting .516 for the week – ending the trip with a .524 for average on the season. This week, the sophomore had multi-hit games in all but one contest, with three hits in three of the seven games played. He has at least one hit in all ten of the team’s games this season. Six of his 16 hits were doubles, and nine total went for extra bases. In Sunday’s game against Georgetown, Maas hit a three-run home run in the second inning to blow open a 2-0 game and pace Penn to a 5-0 lead that turned into a 9-5 win. For the season, Maas has a slugging pct. of .881 and an on-base pct. of .523 for an OPS of 1.404.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Princeton’s Brian Berkowitz (Marietta, Ga.) enjoyed a nice series against William & Mary over the weekend, pacing the Tigers from the plate. The junior outfielder was a menace at the plate, and finished six-for-13 (.462). Two the six hits were home runs, including a grand slam in the third game of the weekend. The College Baseball Blog continues our previews of conferences around the nation today with a preview of the Red Rolfe Division of the Ivy League. The Dartmouth Big Green won the divisional title last season which qualified them for the Ivy League Championship series. The Big Green ended up losing the three game set with the Columbia Lions. Cambridge, Mass. – Harvard announced its preliminary 2009 baseball schedule. After recent years of traveling to Florida and California during the early portion of its schedule, Harvard will travel to Louisiana and Alabama this time around.

Harvard opens the campaign on a 20-game road trip, including a 16-game slate of games in the deep South. A number of new opponents will face off against Joe Walsh’s Crimson including the season-opening, four-game series against Jacksonville State. Read the rest of this entry »
