Here is your Patriot League Recap for April 11th

Lehigh 4 Lafayette 3 (7 innings)

EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 3-2 Lafayette lead and hold on for a 4-3 win in Patriot League baseball action on Saturday at Kamine Stadium. The Warning Track with Brian Foley checks in today with some of the biggest question marks heading into the weekend’s action.

The Big East squads and a few other conferences started up play on Thursday to avoid having a conflict with the Easter holiday on this Sunday. I find it very odd that one of the schools that didn’t change up their schedule is the College of the Holy Cross who is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Easter Sunday against Bucknell. Patriot League Player of the Week (March 30-April 5)
Matt Perry, Holy Cross Jr., 3B, Sudbury, Mass.

Perry had an impressive week to lead Holy Cross to a 4-2 overall record and keep the Crusaders on top of the Patriot League standings with a split of a weekend series at Army. Perry was 12-for-24 (.500) with four home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs scored in Holy Cross’ contests. He also notched three doubles and four walks to finish with an on-base percentage of .571 for the week. Perry had an outstanding doubleheader as the Crusaders swept the Black Knights on Saturday. He was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in an 11-2 win in game one, and went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs in game two. Perry also played a big role in two one-run wins in non-League play, hitting a home run in a 6-5 victory over Massachusetts on Tuesday and going 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in a 12-11 triumph at Harvard on Wednesday. He notched the game-winning single in the ninth inning against the Crimson. Perry leads the Patriot League with six home runs and a .688 slugging percentage this year. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ben Koenigsfeld allowed one run in the first inning, then fired six scoreless frames for a complete-game victory in the opener and Clint Moore tripled, doubled, scored two runs and drove in two runs in the nightcap, leading Army to a doubleheader sweep of Holy Cross in Patriot League action, Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) went five for eight with three home runs and six runs batted in, to lead the Holy Cross baseball team to a sweep of Army in a doubleheader at Doubleday Field. The Crusaders won the first game 11-2, then posted a 10-4 victory in the nightcap. Holy Cross improves to 12-14 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League with the wins, and has now won seven straight games. Army falls to 10-13 on the season and 1-5 in the conference. LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell smashed five home runs and received a pair of strong pitching performances as it swept a baseball doubleheader from Army Saturday at Depew Field. The Bison won game one 2-1 behind a complete game five-hitter from Trey Frahler (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and a two-run home run by Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College). In game two, Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) hit two home runs and Chris Yamaguchi (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) limited the Black Knights to two runs on eight hits in eight innings to improve to 4-0 this season as Bucknell triumphed 18-2. The College Baseball Blog made the short trek over to Holy Cross to take in a split doubleheader with Holy Cross playing both Yale and Quinnipiac in nine inning games. Matt Brown (San Diego, Calif.), Zach Burdeau (Andover, Mass.), John Colella (Herndon, Va.), Jordan Enos (Stockton, Calif.), Vaughn Hayward (Glendale, R.I.), Chris Kono (Greenwich, Conn.), Alexis Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Thomas Marra (Sea Cliff, N.Y.), Josh Olson (Woodbury, Min..), Patrick Puenetes (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and Steph Wadsworth (Wayland, Mass.) will join the Holy Cross program in 2009. Center Valley, Pa. – Army has been selected as the favorite to claim the 2009 Patriot League Baseball title in a preseason poll of the League’s head coaches and sports information directors.

The Black Knights claim the top spot with 48 points and eight first-place votes after finishing first in the regular season last year with a 13-7 mark in League games. Navy followed in second place with 37 points and two first-place votes. Holy Cross claimed a first-place vote and came in third position with 30 points. Defending champion Bucknell and Lafayette shared fourth place in the poll with 24 points, with the Leopards also claiming a first-place vote. Lehigh rounds out the poll with 17 points. Head coaches and sports information directors were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Read the rest of this entry »

We continue our countdown to the 2009 season by looking at the Patriot League. The Bucknell Bison won the Patriot League Tournament last season by upsetting Army and Navy to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Bison made an impact on the NCAA Tournament by knocking off number 4 national seed Florida State 7-0 in the opening round of the Tallahassee Regional behind a tremendous pitching performance from Matthew Wilson. The Bison went on to lose the next two games in the Regional but the impact that the team made last year will be memorable. Read the rest of this entry »
